This plant was about 3 inches tall when I bought it at Target for $2.99 about 9 years ago. The first couple years I transplanted it twice into successively larger containers until I decided to put it into the ground. It is on the south side of my house in direct sun all day long and benefits from my landscaping water. It must like it there because not only did it continue to grow, but the growth seemed to accelerate each year (unlike some of my cycads and exotic palms). Now, it is just over 4 feet tall and began to bud in May for the first time. There are over 20 buds on the crown and 6 flowers in full bloom, and it looks like the flowers will continue to appear for at least another month or so. Now I am beginning to wonder how tall it is eventually going to get!

They can get decent size but I wouldn't worry. It's not the sun per se that is affecting the growth but the heat trap you've put it in. Nicely done.

They get pretty tall! I can't seem to locate the photo at the moment, but just last weekend I saw a multi-stemmed plant with 7-9 large trunks the tallest of which was 11'OA. I'll try to post the photo later.

Nice! My 3 footer collapse after the 2007 freeze. I've since got to little 1 gal from HD. They have become 2 footers in a year.

Good eye!

That is actually an Encephalartos umbeluziensis in a container that I moved there temporarily before I put it in the ground permanently (at another spot in the garden).

Jody, interesting photo, do these plants develop offshoots from the base? Nothing like that on mine, but I do like the height - it will eventually stand out in a neighborhood full of boring Queens & Pygmies.

They do have offshoots from the base. They can also branch above ground (as you can see in the photo).
