Germinating journey : borassus aethiopum
Fusca replied to Nico971's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Very nice! It's a shame that you lost 3 but you probably don't have room for planting 5 Borassus! 😄 -
Caryota kirriwongensis seedlings looking
tim_brissy_13 replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I had to pot up my C kiriwongensis twice while they were still sending out their first frond. You can just just from a young age these will be monsters. Mine now fill out deep 140mm containers and only now working on the second frond. They’ll get larger than any other Caryota, including C obtusa! -
Perfect, I’ll send a PM

I never had one get so tall. My largest made it to the peak of my one-story house. Then, 2010 it snowed 5 times and the crown wasn't blocked from north winds. Typical production was two dozen leaves (24-26) from March until it hit about 20°F.

Hello ! One of the most original palm to germinate. Maybe my technique was not the best but managed to have 2 beautiful seedlings : lost 3/5 because the tap root was too fast and got through the pot

Mangoes at 43⁰N? Why not?
JohnAndSancho replied to gurugu's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
I've had the same problem with them rotting - I was treating them like papaya with a humidity dome over them and letting the husk soak too long before pulling the seed out. Don't get me wrong, I still have plenty die on me but since I quit giving them 100% humidity and soaking them I'm doing well. Everything I'm growing so far is just the Tommy Atkins and Kiett I find in the supermarkets. I've tried to germinate some of the yellow ones I found in the Mexican market but they seem to take their time to germinate. I just put them in a 1g pot of moist coir and put them on my heat mat and let them go now. -

Cycad pollination
Scott W replied to Darold Petty's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
For most Cycas, the female opens her cone when receptive. Then its a matter of either hand pollinating each nodule, dusting the female cone multiple times over multiple days or just leaving the male cone on top of the female and letting nature do the work. Dioon, Encephalartos and Ceratozamia are a complete different beast... -

Yes, I remember when he used to post but it's been a long time ago. Hopefully you can make a visit here - I'd be happy to show you this and my personal collection although most of the rarer stuff is still small. Oliver's collection at his office is impressive and I'm sure he's got some interesting palms at his house too. 😊 -

I have also sprouted a bunch of seeds, but they get rotten easily. Originally the tree was Osteen variety, but when I planted it in the ground several years ago in a colder place, the Grafting got burnt. I took the tree out and planted it in a big pot, thinking it was already dead. It survived and two years ago I planted it in the ground , in my new garden , and this year it has set these fruits. -

Yeah, the newest frond has no spore "pods", although I assume they develop later on each frond. The older leaves have the spore pods in both open and unopened condition.

Some rarer than chicken s teeth, one day they will be planted in the garden. Richard

If that’s the case plant three right next to the neighbours house, right in line with there pool actually along there driveway the leaves are rather large so they shouldn’t bother the cars underneath🤣 Richard -

No, never been to the United States. But Oliver is a very well known poster because he had one of the best and biggest collection in Texas. He is one of the few collectors in Texas who dared to zone push rarer species of Dypsis (At the time when PT was all about Dypsis). -

I've just recently started sprouting a bunch from the fruit I eat. I need to go take a picture of one, they're so pretty when they're tiny and allegedly tree ripened fruit tastes so much better than the supermarkets. What variety is this? -
IT BEGINS! Can I just say one thing? I'm having much better results with tube style lights vs the bulbs, even shop lights are fine if you're not actively trying to fruit or flower. If you guys are renting, you can use those double sided 3M command style hooks to hang them from the ceiling, and Amazon has some really cheap deals on chains for lowering them. Your light will be dispersed a lot more evenly, even if it's not as pretty. Maybe Sabine can go and have a talk at someone at a hardware or big box store to get a deal on those too 😂 Seriously you've got a nice looking setup there and it's just a matter of time before you outgrow that area.

@PlantMorePalms that looks great! Flora Grubb usually has a few varieties at any given time. I got a 'Cyril' there a couple of years ago. It has been a strong grower and flowered for the first time in August. I actually got this one at an orchid show in GGP last February. It got set back by a limb from the neighbor's tree trimming right after planting but seems to have recovered now. -

happypalms replied to yhegd76's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I have three of them and they dislike dry conditions and lack of humidity, they prefer a cool place in the greenhouse, none in the ground yet. I soon worked out not to grow them in a hothouse thinking they needed super cool protection in winter quite the opposite actually, it’s the hot dry no humidity they dislike. The two in the picture I have a water jug full of water for a bit of extra humidity and they are sitting just of the ground on a pallet which I keep wet underneath. Not sure if I ever will plant them in the ground they are to rare and precious to kill. But if you to see some real hum dingers check out @realarch he’s the one that will give any palm grower palm envy in a blink of an eye, being one of those lucky Hawaii growers that look at there palms and they grow a foot with each look! -
Any chance you could throw one or 2 of the hybrids in the box with my Uresana?

What kind of palm tree or exotic plant did you buy today, or seeds for one?
JohnAndSancho replied to Mazat's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Shipping is absolute murder on anything bigger than a seedling. If the entire size of the box is larger than 1 cu ft you're gonna pay more to ship than what the plants cost 9 times outta 10, especially now with the holiday increases. -

Everything I’ve read about this stunning palm is that it’s one of the more difficult species to grow being naive to cloud forest regions of the Amazons. Photo below is not mine. -
Nothing marginal? Never been tempted to push the zone a bit?
