Two Dypsis to Identify...

I won't state where I got these or what they might be. I want to wait for a few posts to get a consensus on each first. Both are in 1-gallon pots for size reference. Here's Dypsis #1.

I'll make another post in the tropical looking plants forum as well, but here are some palmy pics of what is left of my collection. I have started to collect again so I am sure one winter in the future will claim more victims. This is my caryota bought as "mystery Clumper" No clumps after 7 years. Took the winter like a champ! A very sad archontophoenix: Woody coming back: Dypsis mad. looking sad:

The hardiest feather palm.
by reggieroo- 1 follower

I'm looking at getting a new feather palm for here in Worcestershire, UK. I have tried CIDP with no success at all also had Butia capitata that I lost this last Winter (which was our worst in 30 years).I want to use as little protection as possible in the garden over Winter as I use the garden still during the cold weather & hate everything wrapped up. The only palms that survived last Winter unprotected was trachycarpus fortunei & two Chamaerops humilis which took a beating. I have looked at getting Butia odorata or Butia eriospatha but I'm thinking Jubaea chilensis is the hardiest of them all.

Areca vestiaria avenue update from April 20
by Cindy Adair- 14 replies
- 1.8k views
The first photo shows the rope I left in April to measure and mark the spot. We planted 32 Areca vestiaria palms 7 feet apart in 2 rows with a 15-20 feet path between the rows for walking. I used chopsticks with orange flagging tape to mark the spots and my husband used a posthole digger for the holes. Each of our children planted a few and I put in the rest. Almost immediately a little lizard inspected our work. As it's the rainy season and these 4" pots were full of roots, we have great expectations for these trees and can't wait to see them again in November. Thanks to everyone who helped with suggestions and support when I posted this idea in April and I've enjoyed le…

Seems to me, many aren't willing to share from aus, I'm not talking about occasional posters here, although they are bad enough, I'm talking non-posters, those that have the palm bug but just park outside and don't enter. Lots of knowledge lost. That's all I have to say about that...

Ever used a Smart Pot?
by Troy_ATX- 8 replies

I've got a few 25 gal trees about to crawl out of their plastic containers so I'm looking for roomier homes for them. I stumbled on these fabric pots online called Smart Pots (in small to 300gal sizes). Has anyone had any experience with these? Are they durable? Or are these more for plants and less for trees?

Dypsis ID
by Miccles- 9 replies

Hi All, Bought this palm approx 2 years ago at a fire sale. The lady told me vaguely that it was "Atherton Palm", but that was all she knew. Atherton palm is another name for Laccospadix australasica, which from the following pictures, should be ruled out fairly quickly on trunk size alone. I kinda get the feeling it's a Dypsis of some sort. At first glance, it looks a little bit like a Dypsis decipiens... but the following make me think not. i) This palm is beginning to trunk, and the "trunkal region" looks must unlike decipiens. ii) The leaves and leaflets are much less stiff and different overall shape to decipiens. iii) The angle of the leaflets...the "V" …

Dypsis decaryi rescued!
by Cindy Adair- 4 replies

A few weeks ago I innocently looked in the tropicals section on my way to pick up something else at my Virginia Home Depot and saw an employee pull a little triangle palm for the sale rack which is only a few days before the dumpster. Actually, I probably used the "need" for something else at the store for an excuse to check out the plants. Anyway, when they put a $4.99 price including the "decorative pot" with NO drainage holes, I knew the "tropical palm" needed to come home with me. Unless I'm mistaken, it's a triangle palm and we only have two of those so certainly need a third, right? With some TLC and a pot allowing drainage , it perked right up and passed inspection…

Treasure hunt yields palm
by Cindy Adair- 1 reply

I gave a tiny seedling to my husband for Christmas and took it to Puerto Rico in January. Because it was the dry season, we planted it in a shadier but wetter part of the farm. The next trip we moved the tiny plant yet again into full sun. Last July I looked for it unsuccessfully and assumed the worst. Last week I was more persistent. At least I wanted to unearth the PVC pipe. My husband attacked the area I vaguely remembered choosing and under 4-5 feet tall vines/grasses discovered the orange flagging tape attached to a PVC pipe with a Copernicia fallaensis aluminum tag. He didn't see any sign of a palm. When I got down on my hands and knees I removed the final layer of …

Chambeyronia macrocarpa?
by Cindy Adair- 6 replies
I know it seems crazy, but we didn't even know this palm existed and it's only a few yards from the house. It was covered by plantains and a Lychee and vines, but with the help of a machete last weekend it popped out just in time to show off its new frond. It was like an early Christmas present! Since I'm guessing the species from pictures, please let me know so this palm can have an official aluminum tag next visit. Thanks!

Silver Joey lives!!
by Cindy Adair- 2 replies
We were excited to be able to purchase a lovely silver Joey from a Palmtalk member in Florida early in 2010 (thank you!!!). From there we carefully packed the palm to fly as baggage to Virginia and repacked for flight to Puerto Rico last April. After planting, no human even checked on the palm until we visited again in July. It seemed alive with perhaps a new spear but we weren't sure. Last week we were able to make a long weekend and lo and behold saw a new leaf and a new spear! To say we were happy would be quite an understatement!!! The undersides of all the leaves already show the beautiful silver. We can't wait to see what happens by next visit (April 2011).
