Help with Licuala ID
by Tom Hulse- 5 replies
Hello all, my first post here. I'm hoping you might be able to help with identifying this Licuala that I recently collected seeds from. It belongs to a friend in Kauai that doesn't know which one it is. I thought perhaps L. spinosa, but I've heard that most of the Licualas have spines, and several have the divided leaves, so I'm not really sure. Many thanks!

Need C. renda suggestions
by OldNed- 18 replies

Here's the situation: I got this Palm as a retirement gift in 2003. It grew from about 5 ft tall when I got it to more than 9 ft at the end of last year. Brought it inside every time temps were predicted to go below 45 degrees but the stress of last Jan. was just too much for it. Thought it was a goner but it has recovered (check the red circle in the 2nd pic)-and is now growing pretty fast. The pot it's in is heavy and still a pain to keep bring inside every cold snap. So-should I try to "pot it down" and start over? My concern of course is will re-potting this guy be taking too much of a chance of killing it? Advice please.

Urban Rainforest after the rain 1 2
by Urban Rainforest- 75 replies

The palms always seem to look better right after a rain. The fronds get washed off and the colors really pop and then I run around like a madman with my camera. Oct. rains in So Cal are rare but this year we got plenty. Here are a few that caught my eye. Archontophoenix Purpurea triple. Stevo

palms flattened in an instant
by Miccles- 17 replies

Today was an incredibly muggy, humid day in Melbourne...sitting at 32C most of the day. About 40 minutes ago, the skies turned black, several huge roars of thunder were heard and then BANG... the most torrential downpour I have seen down here. It truly was like something from the tropics. I had new camera in hand, marvelling at the sheer volume of water being laid down from above, when I heard an almighty CRACK in the front yard. To my horror, a huge branch had snapped off the tree out on the front sidewalk. The branch would have weighed about 70-80 kg, and it landed fairly and squarely on my pride and joy: My 1.7m tall Parajubaea. It also wrecked my Queen x Wedding…

Hello fans of the King palms, one of the palm ID questions I get asked is the differences between bangalow and alex palms. There's two main easily identifiable differences and growing next door to me are great examples. Alex flower is white and under leaf is silver. Bangalow flower is lilac/purple and under leaf is green. Let's go to the photos. Alexander the Great Bangalow the Bold here endeth the lesson...

Dictyocaryum lamarckianum

A palm seller in S FL is offering a 12" Dictyocaryum for auction. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense because that palm is a longterm goner in this here climate but there you go. However, if you are interested in obtaining this species PM me for the link because I can't post it here.

Calcutta Botanical Gardens

I undertook a short early morning trip to the Calcutta Botanical Gardens today, this having been on my agenda for the last few years, and been put off repeatedly due to the distance. I was interested because (1) I wanted to see the legendery great banyan and (2) I had heard there were a few interesting palms including one of my favourites - the talipot. I managed to spend three hours there today, covering a small portion of the area, but nonetheless captured some interesting sights. The photography is sub standard as the dense overhead canopy allows very little light to come through and creates too many bright spots where it does. Licuala Grandis R. madagasc…

Been visiting a fantastic display garden at a new nursery up on the tablelands . Did not recognize so many of the plantings . This one stood out amongst massed bromeliads I was initially admiring . Anyone else growing some of these ? Only 2 in the garden and none have flowered yet .

East side, West side

This past weekend I took photos of my back yard shade garden, back yard garden-in-progress and both side yards. The shade garden consumed over 100 photos, so I will attack that in a separate topic, as I will the front garden after I photograph that. In this topic, I'm tackling everything else. I was inspired by MattyB's record of his spectular garden in SD. And I hope more of us in climes that are facing winter will also post their gardens. I wish I'd taken photos last November but that is another story. So, starting in the west side of the back yard. That still looks a little skimpy because we've been working on it at intervals. We still have more rototilling to accom…

What's wrong with our Kentia?
by phoenixbob- 14 replies
- 1.8k views
We planted a triple Kentia (Howea forsteriana) a few months ago, but now one of the triple is starting to look rather bad. It's starting to turn yellow and looking like it's drying out, yet the others right next to it are doing just fine. Any suggestions? We've had potassium deficiency issues in our yard in the past, but I put several Lutz palm fertilizer spikes outside the root ball when I planted this grouping. Doesn't look like a deficiency to me anyway. I don't really understand why this one looks so bad when the other two, part of the same box, all planted as one unit, are doing well.

wallichia disticha
by Mike Evans- 13 replies

I have a few wallichia disticha in the garden. The oldest is ~10 years old & flowered last year w/o producing any viable seed. After this record cold winter in St Pete, FL, it has sent out 3 more inflorescence. Hopefully it will be pollinated this time. Has anyone else had experience w/ multiple flowering & produced seed with the later inflorescence? Last pic is a smaller one that is starting to produce 2 inflorescence. It is much smaller, younger & shade grown. The cold has really started them up. How many times do they flower before the final breath?

Brahea nitida?
by Geoff- 9 replies
- 2.1k views
Got this small 5 gal seedling about 5 years ago... somewhat slow but is starting to pick up. Got it as a B nitida, but seems like something else, mostly cause it has some tiny teeth on the petioles and I though nitida was a toothless creature. Now the leaves don't like quite circular enough.

Parajubaea comparisons (again)
by Geoff- 5 replies

I showed these three palms last year, but they have all grown quite a bit since and now have fronds way over my head... and the two P torralyis have caught up with the P sunkha in terms of frond height, though the latter has a 1 year head start on the other two and has a larger trunk base. But here are the petioles again, just to see if they sort of make sense in terms of description. First one is Parajubaea torralyi torralyi, then P torralyi microcarpum and lastly P sunkha:

Big frond ,...(but not red)

Here is a photo of the oldest, recently shed frond of Ceroxylon quindiuense. It is 6.7 meters long (22 feet). Any larger in California? Are there any Raffia or Attalea species in SoCal? I doubt I will ever get the chance to measure a frond from Pauleen's C. ventricosum.

A friend of mine asked me to post these for an ID, I initially thought it to be Ravanea rivularis but looking at the second photo, it could well be a Rhopie. Also any idea on the small thin trunk, unfortunately he did not send a full shot of this palm. Regards Andy.

Phosphorus

I read many OZ natives do not like phosporus, does this mean OZ soils are low in phosphorus? Should I fertilise with a fertilize to that will increase phosphate levels? Phosphate seems important to producing a strong system? Yes? Do palms need extra phosphorus?

The World's Most Tropical Palm
by AggiePalms- 11 replies
- 1.2k views
OK folks, I need you to identify the apparently most tropical palm in the world. This is, I hope, humorously misguided. Situation: I am currently working part time at a Big Box store, and a customer arrived needing a heater. Or a braincell, I'm not sure which. Heater is for her polycarbonate greenhouse (supposedly with a metal roof???), which is apparently 480 square feet. She supposedly turned down an offer from her family for a 6000 square foot greenhouse. Right, I'm believing this story. Anyway, she needed a small table top electric heater for her greenhouse, so it would keep the ambient temperature at least 80 degrees during the coldest day of the winter…

It had to come to me it was only a matter of time After losing three mature CIDP last year to Fusarium oxysporum I had one CIDP left, which I kept under close surveillance, seeing all those affected trees around my hood It was trimmed last March (fronds were hanging in the drive way) and inspected for weevil damage or entry points We found nothing that indicated the presence of the RPW but decide to give it a spray of insecticide and nematodes anyway With cooler weather now we decided to give it another trim and inspection Leonardo(French) arrived with his Bulgarian help and started disinfecting the chainsaw with bleach and diesel so not to spread Fusarium , he a…
