palms for winter wet areas?
by nkbish- 13 replies

This is my first post, I am a first time home-owner and started landscaping this spring. I have 2 locations I want to put palms which get lots of water in the winter (1 with roof run-off, other with low spot in the yard). Is there anything which would do ok having wet roots in the winter? My area- North San Diego County 10 miles inland. The two spots would be in 1/2 - 3/4 day sun. Thanks for any suggestions.

Exhibit 'A'. Here are three existing in grounders, who were in need of three amigos, what could I do ? In they went. And now there are six. Can't have an even number as we all know, so I'll have to be on the lookout for one or three more.

Mushrooms on dying palm!
by Kailua_Krish- 5 replies

Hi all, I have a C. humilis that I trimmed over the summer, after which it started declining. 2 weeks ago the center few leaves pulled. Today I noticed circular brown and tan mushrooms around the base of the palm. They don't look like ganoderma mushrooms as they are not attached to the palm at the cap part but are growing from the base of the palm from stalks. They are about 2-3 inches in diameter. Unfortunately I don't have pics. Is this something serious? I don't care if the palm dies because I don't really want it there but I don't want a serious palm disease spreading in my yard! -Krishna

Hi everyone I took this video early one morning (about 7:30 ) when we were staying at Bob and Jennifers . Just about everything in the garden is on here and the trickling of water features and humming birds make the soundtrack complete . Oh except for the occasional sigh as i was nursing a hangover from the BBQ when Vince AKA Palm Curry came over . I had to edit the video into 2 parts to upload it may take a little while to buffer on some connections so please be patient. Testing new phone's camera
by osideterry- 13 replies
- 1.2k views
My cell phone I've had since 2006 died last week, so I was forced to upgrade. I prefer doing all my internet stuff on my laptop, so i really didn't want the added expense of a data plan. So my goal was to get the cheapest phone with AT&T that had the best camera, and no data plan. It came down to a Sony Ericsson model that has a 3.2 megapixel camera, and it was free withe the plan. I needed to drop my wife off at SD Airport this morning, and decided to try my new "camera" out on the grove of Jubaea at Mission Bay. I know everyone's seen these a bunch already, so yawn if you have to.

Guihaia argyrata & grossifibrosa 1 2

Guihaia is a small palm that I don't see much of, and I wonder why? It's quite cold hardy and will grow in Calif, as well as tropical areas. Maybe because it's so slow, and nurserymen like faster growing palms? I knew a nurserylady in the Redlands area of S. Fla. and I think she might have been the first to recieve thousands of seeds from China. They were labeled Rhapis humilis. After a couple of years it became apparent they were not Rhapis, even though the seedlings look similar. She was quite "put out" as she had spent a lot of time and effort germinating, and potting them to 4" liners. At the time, no one knew much about the species and there was very little i…

Seed Germination

Just curious what others have found is the best time to remove seeds from the community germination containers. So far I have found that if I keep some in too long they start to damp off. I'm thinking prior too or at the first sign of a leaf might be best. Matt

Foxtail
by MattyB- 21 replies

I should have known better, but I got this Foxtail after it had already formed a skinny woody trunk in the greenhouse. It's still growing but the trunk doesn't look so good and it's doing that sucking in thing. Is there any chance of survival or should I just get it out now? The rust colored stain stuff I'm not too concerned about. Foxtails seem to do this sometimes. It's the silver fuzz rotting, not pink rot. I am concerned about the skinny trunk.

What mineral deficiency (or excess) is causing these queens to frizzle out? Most are very well watered, but I don't know what fertilizers are applied. Seems to be faily common on queens throughout the region, but esp. prevalent on this site. Some in turf, some in groundcover. Any recommendations I can pass along to their site manager? Thanks in advance.

so if we look at this chart of a cross section thru a palm root system where should the supply of water be to promote the fastest growth ? or in other words to get maximum growth from a set amount of water would you put 80% near the drip line 20% just past that. or 50% drip line 50 % near deep center root system (bulb)..........or some other ???? we can even take this another step - how deep on this chart must the water go ? do we water to zone III OR zone IV ?

Drought Tolerance
by Kumar- 8 replies
Many palms, especially in the family coryphoideae are labelled as drought hardy, but in objective terms how much is that? The reason I ask is that I want to examine the growth of one such palm (potted) under full Tropic of Cancer sun with no supplimental water except dew / rainfall. I have a hyphanae, a sabal, and a bismarckia and one of these I hope to experiment upon. All are potted in clay pots about 14 inches high and 12 inches diameter. How long do you think they can go without water in winter sun ?

Dypsis decipiens
by Surf Guy- 11 replies

I have heard that Dypsis decipiens should be planted high because it will pull itself further into the soil. I planted mine in April and it has REALLY attached itself to the ground and has pulled itself down closer to where the soil line is getting closer to the growing point. I have heard that the growing point is below th soil line that it could spell disaster for the plant. Enclosed are a few pix of mine. Do I need to dig a little around it to expose more of the growing point or am I just trippin'? I hate to lose this one. This is round four for me. Thanks for any advice. Mike
