Dear IPS members; I am bringing sad news of Ania's passing. She left us on February 26th after long and courageous battle with cancer. She is missed so very, very much by me, our daughter Joanna and our son Paul. Her love to palms is shared by me. Although She was participating in IPS i was with Her planting, caring and enjoying the palms. In Her tradition I would like to join the IPS but I need some help and guidance in breaking in. Jerzy

Many of us lost a good friend on Wednesday night with the passing of John Bishock. John would post on this site as John from Old Miakka. He was diagnosed with liver cancer less than 6 months ago and had been doing fairly well despite the rigors of chemotherapy. I had the pleasure of seeing him in December for a Christmas cookout where he was in remarkably good spirits and as enthusiastic about palms as ever. He and Faith had attended all of the Biennials with the exception of the most recent trip to DR. I was fortunate enough to have John and Faith attend my recent wedding. John will be sorely missed, not only as a fountain of palm knowledge, but as a dear friend. …

Palm Society, It saddens me to announce the passing of another palm legend, Mardi Darian of Vista, California. Many have known Mardi for decades. In fact, we just had a tour of his garden by the PSSC in early July of this year. Unfortunately, on this past Tuesday, 25 August, Mardi died. He was 82 years old. I confirmed this with his wife, Cherie, a few minutes ago. He passed away in peace with no pain. Mardi was best known for his knowledge of the palms of Madagascar. He made a total of eleven trips to that island over several decades to study its palms. He was influential in describing species that were later formally named by palm taxonomists. In fact, one very exotic…

Hi Everyone, it is a very sad day for the Aussie Ratpackers and all who loved him, but Wal Donovan passed away early this morning, April the 25th, a national day of remembrance in Australia (ANZAC Day). Wal will be sadly missed by his children and their families and all of us in the palm community. Also those members of PACSOA, BPACS and the IPS who have all had good times with Wal. Wal was our source of quirky jokes and also a great mate who looked after all around him, a generous and caring man whose friendship was greatly valued by all of us. It is truly a sad day and we will all miss him and his antics greatly. Wal was also an IPS director which shows hi…

-RLR's "Favorite Palm"
by Diane Kirkland- 30 replies
- 12.7k views
One of the funniest things about Bob Riffle was his inability to settle on a favorite palm -- I always said it was the one in front of him at the moment. He'd call me on his cell phone huffing around Montgomery or Fairchild or The Kampong and describe what he was seeing ... many favorites! I'm writing an article about RLR for the IPS Palms publication and would like to include the list of his "favorite palm" as told to you all. Trust me, I know there is more than one. I realize these have been mentioned in other threads, but it would be easier to have them all in one place. Thanks so much. D.

My palm buddy is gone

Sadly we had to put down our 1.5yo dog yesterday. He started having seizures in November and no amount of medicine was able to control them. We tried everything we could to save him but he still would have up to 6 seizures a day. We finally went to a dog neurologist that gave us the bad news that he had all the signs of cranial distemper, something he must have picked up in the Bahamas as a stray. After suffering two back to back debilitating seizures, we decided it was time. This was probably one of the hardest thing I have ever had to do. His name was Abaco and we got him from a shelter in the Bahamas. From the time he was a puppy and right up to he end, he lo…

I received a call from Terry Sullivan this morning, informing Cindy and I that Pauleen Sullivan his mom, has passed away on Wednesday August 8th 2012. Cindy and I are very saddened to hear this. Pauleen, to us, will always be the palm queen. Her gardens in Ventura and Hawaii and her passion for palms have been very inspirational to me and many others. Pauleen has traveled all over the world for the love of her passion palm trees and has never let the fact that she was in a wheelchair, due to Polio, at a younger age stop her for any reason. I have many memories with Pauleen. I will never forget the time when she had spray painted a palm crownshaft orange as a prank, …

Queman58/Bret's posting of a Beccariophoenix photo made me think of many of the comments RLR made, on the Forum, and presumably in private conversations as well, about palms that he really liked. I don't think it's appropriate to begin adding photos to the other thread in this section, which is why I'm starting a new thread. How about photos of all the palms that Bob, at some point in time, told us that he liked? This could become a photo gallery in his memory with all his favorite palms, and maybe a few others as well! I also plan on planting a palm in his memory, and I know many others who intend to do the same thing. Personally, I think it would be nice if we start a…

Everyone: I was advised yesterday by Don Hodel that Carol Hooper, formerly of La Habra, passed away yesterday at about 11 a.m. in a hospice. She was there for an inoperable brain tumor. Will advise as to times, places, etc. of memorial services, if any. Until very recently, Carol and her husband Louis lived "down the hill" from me in La Habra, and I had occasion to spend many a happy afternoon with them. Occasionally, I had taken pictures and posted them on Palm Talk. RIP Carol, miss you.
