The Northern Calif. chapter of the IPS will hold a meeting on June 8th at the home of Edith Bergstrom in Atherton. Edith is our chapter secretary, a botanical artist, and has composed a fantastic 2 acre garden of more than 200 palm species. Visit our website for details and directions at www.palmsnc.org

At Edith Bergstroms place from 1-4 pm. We are delighted to have an invitation to visit one of the most beautiful gardens in the area. The garden is large and diverse, including several microclimate niches from desert to tropical. Of course there is a spectacular collection of mature and exotic palm specimens to enhance your botanical experience. There will be a potluck and auction. More information to be posted soon. I won't be able to go as I have another commitment. I'm bummed as Ive heard Edith's place is really nice.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 19th at the Oakland Palmetum. The Mediteranean garden has been planted and it is already in full bloom. It makes a wonderful entrance to the palm garden. Mark your calendars. More details will follow.

We will be at the Casper Curto Garden 7612 Hillmont Drive Oakland, Ca May 12, 2019 1-5pm Persian architect Ali Yazdi built the residence at 7612 Hillmont Drive in 1993. After the owners purchased a neighboring 4000 parcel, the new half-acre site was cleared of dense non-native foliage such as cotoneaster, Scotch broom, and sweet pea. Over 500 linear feet of redwood fencing was constructed along with the installation of primary electrical and water lines. Hello Palm Friends! The Northern California Palm Society is planning on resuming activities and garden visits this summer. As COVID restrictions continue to decline, we are so looking forward to seeing our palm tree enthusiast friends. Our long-time Oakland Palmetum volunteers Darold Petty and Richard Quiroz are no longer involved with the palmetum. Richard has also stepped down from his role as the NCPS President. Northern California Palm enthusiasts, Save the date, March 24, 1-5 pm, for our annual NCPS banquet. We are looking forward to an afternoon of food and conversation as well as a tour of the UC Berkeley botanical gardens led by UC horticultural staff member Dylan Ferreira. The UC Berkeley garden is a treasure trove of rare palms that include the genera Ceroxylon, Brahea, Ravenea and Parajubaea as well as many others. Details will be coming soon. Save the date!

John Smolowe's Garden Date: Sunday, August 15th, 2010 Time: 1-5 pm Location: 560 Berkeley Ave. Menlo Park The Smolowe & Werne garden is over 20 years old (Sunset zone 15), and is planted on a one acre lot. Join us for our upcoming meeting, potluck and auction in sunny Santa Cruz, famous for it's popular beach and boardwalk, at the home Richard Josephson. This is a well established (1983) collection of palms, bamboos and subtropicals. Situated in Sunset zone 17, the garden features mature Acoelorrhaphe wrightii and Phoenix reclinata (both with 18 ft. trunks!) as well as mature Rhopalostylus sapida and baueri. Many other palms are featured including a Caryota gigas that is likely the largest in Northern California. A large pond and greenhouse are also included in this wonderful garden. Please save the date for our next meeting, on Saturday, August 17 from 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., with visits to two fabulous gardens in San Jose and Los Gatos. This is a rare treat to be able to be able to visit two mature gardens curated by Dave Sylvia and Diane Wotus. These gardens maintain dozens of rare plants, many of which have been cultivated for 10-20 years. For the interested palm tree enthusiast, this meeting should not be missed.
