Opihikao Garden Tour on Sunday April 6. This is a HIPS (Hawaii Island Palm Society) meeting being held at Davis Dalbok's beautiful garden located in the SE corner of the Big Island of Hawaii. To get to the garden: From Kea`au, take Hwy 130 past Pahoa. From the beginning of the Pahoa Bypass it is 5.7 miles to the Opihikao turn off to the left. This is past Leilani Blvd. and past the Scenic Overlook by the steam vents, or 0.25 miles after mile post 15 on Hwy 130. Central Florida Palm & Cycad Society Quarterly Meeting Date: Saturday, March 8 Location 1: Leu Gardens, 1920 N. Forest Ave., Orlando, FL 32803 Time: 10:00 am Tour of palm and cycad collection led by Eric Schmidt (Eric and Orlando on this board). According to Eric, they have approximately 375 species of palms and 65 species of cycads in the collection. About 125 species have been planted in the last 5 years or so. Since the last CFPACS meeting in January 2003 they haven't been below freezing until this year, January 3, 2008, it was down to 31F . Everybody welcome, The farm will be hosting the march 17th meeting of the south Texas palm society. Lunch and drinks are on us, bbq etc... so bring your appetite. we will have the feed and all at my dads place and an auction to benefeit the palm societys botanical garden at my house which is just around the corner from my parents place. who knows who you may see lurking about at a function like this!! All NorCall members, The Byron Hot Springs has a large number of palms (primarily Washingtonia and Phoenix species) that are over 120 years old. The owner/developer is interested in the health and well-being of all of these palms. Is anyone interested in working with me to do a complete assessment of trees on the property? Some of the items to deal with are: 1) GPS siting of each of the trees 2) Assessing the health of many of the older ones. Many have been torched/painted/etc. by vandals. For those of you that live down here in South Florida, does anyone know the exact dates for this annual event? It's a large auction of palms and cycads,(and I believe other plts. as well) that runs the entire evening. The spread of food that is offered is also very delicious as well.
