Howdyall, and it's that time again. Two great gardens in Surf City, USA, aka as Huntington Beach, Orange County Saturday September 20, 2014 Our next meeting will be in Huntington Beach at the homes of Alex Kutas and Carl Hartman. These gentlemen have both been palm enthusiasts for close to 3 decades and these are mature gardens. The palm society last visited their homes about 15 years ago. This should be an exceptionally interesting meeting as both gardens are grown with very different philosophies. Alex is very meticulous and his garden is designed to display the palms in a very organized fashion. Carl, on the other hand, has embraced the dense jungle …

Mark your calendar, November 15th, the PSSC will be holding a garden picnic in Holmby Hills at the home of Drew Zager. This is a marvelous exercise in landscaping transformation where pre-existing is meshed with a heavy touch of the tropics. Drew Zager is the son of PSSC Board Member Bud Zager. Fittingly, the theme of busy lives is "Palms Brought Us Together". The history of this estate in Drew's words: In early 2000, I bought my home in Holmby Hills (west of Beverly Hills - east of Westwood) in a probate sale. The house was in complete disrepair and had been vacant for over two years with no running water. However, the house was paneled with thick Philippine…

KOO-KOO FOR COCONUTS? If you even looked at this post, you know you are! Don’t miss The Palm Society of Southern California's November 21, 2015 meeting in Palm Desert and Coachella! We will be meeting for the first time at two gardens, one of which features a maturing Cocos nucifera. This is at the home and garden of Greg Curdes, at 59905 Avenida Bermudas, La Quinta, CA 92253. Greg planted his coconut in a garden enclosed by a wall and near a pool. The coconut is about 20 feet tall. It's not some anemic excuse, but a bodacious specimen. The next garden will be at the home and garden of PSSC member Danny Lopez, at 48329 Agua Caliente Street, Coachella, CA 92236. Mr. Lo…

To all PSSC members: The Palm Society of Southern California has been the victim of a financial crime, which we first learned about after our meeting on September 20, 2014. Our investigation as to the full extent of losses is continuing and we will keep members updated as details become known. We are working with law enforcement to effect the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. We will not allow this to stop our publication of the Palm Journal or other work we do. We intend to move forward, however much the losses turn out to be. As always, we are and remain grateful for your support. David Bleistein, President
