PSSC November 17, 2018 meeting

Everyone, I'm thrilled to announce the PSSC's next meeting in Anaheim Hills, Orange County, on November 17, 2018. Space. The final frontier, even (especially!) if you have a palm garden. Your palmy artistic ambition often exceeds the physical dimensions at your disposal. Most of us find ourselves, sooner or later, measuring in feet to avoid being too close to a property line, or encroaching on something else, or, heaven forbid, interfering with utility wires. We find, fall in love, then try to shoe-horn it in. If we can. Now imagine a garden that seems divorced from such piddling concerns, with two acres of reasonably level land. A garden where its owner falls …

Dear PSSC members (AND EVERYONE ELSE), I'm pleased to announce that the September 15, 2018 meeting, potluck, and auction will be held at the home and garden of Don Tollefson, at 935 Coeur d'Alene Avenue, Venice, California, in Los Angeles County. Don is a board member of the PSSC, and has been a stalwart nut since I joined in 1993, and before. 25 years-plus! Don's garden is on an "estate-size" lot in one of the very best climates in Southern California. Ocean nearby, out of the tsunami zone, never too hot, humidity to fool the tropicals, so much to love. Don started his garden about 7 years ago, so there's nothing towering overhead. Yet. But there will be, and in th…

The Jackson Grant Garden 16 Brookwood Ln. , Ross Story Behind the Garden We bought the house, our starter, in 1980, moving from potted plants on a Russian Hill fire escape to a real garden. Palms were our favorites. We did test plantings for a few years as we worked out a planting plan. About that time we met Herb Weber and our knowledge of palm trees and the International Palm Society took a giant leap forward. The flood of January 1982 changed all plans. Bridge road was washed out and rebuilt, higher than before. Our construction started in the mid 1980s with the glass house, concrete terraces and retaining wall on Bridge road. Then the house remodel…
