There is a regulary contributing croton forum member at Palmpedia.net named Sergey. Amazingly, Sergey cultivates and hybridizes his plants in a basement in Russia.

We bitch and moan about our growing conditions. This man has some major obstacles to overcome. The following are photos that Sergey posted, this is incredible ...

Full sized photos can be seen in his Palmpedia thread

Awesome.

Crotons don't do jack for me, but it's always great to see people who are willing to overcome seemingly impossible horticultural hurdles.

I recall another guy named Sergei from Russia who used to raise palms in his place in Russia. He was near Chernobyl, more or less.

Hmm. I suspect the eventual size of some palms got to be a problem . . . Crotons are smaller.

WOW. Nuttiness flowers the world over.

I like this ! I do the same thing, not in a basement, though, but a barn that I converted into a plant house. NICE!

Todays croton's ancestors came from Amboina of the Molluca Islands of Indonesia. Plants of the rain forest, they appreciate high humidity and warmth. What Sergey has achieved is remarkable.

Here are some more photos he has posted ... :interesting:

Many of Sergey's crotons are varieties developed in Thailand. These are touchy and difficult to make to survive in South Florida. Most of his crotons are growing in 10 oz. containers. He gets them to bloom, cross pollinates, collects seeds and propogate new and interesting seedlings. This is amazing in my opinion.

My first thought on seeing these well grown croutons was "How does he avoid a spider mite invasion during the long Russian winter"?

So many species,

so little time.
