Dear Friends  :)

i must tell that out of 10 seeds 9 sprouted, some damaged by squrieals and some rotted due to over watering(due to sudden rains)..only 2 are now alive with me !

If you want to know more on this variety here is _ The Link !

And this Medemia Argun desert fan palm is also popularly called as Nubian Desert Palm !

the palm at present is very blueish & a white powder is seen as we come across healthy bismarkia or a breha armeda fan palm.

i think i have spoken enough, lets move on to the repotting work of this 'Nubian palm'...

your opnion & suggestions are always welcome... :)

Love,

Kris  :)

Once this fan palm was planted, from the following day it started raining a bit heavily.the first day of the rainfall i did not take any precaution since rain water was far better than me watering this palm & also would help some soil compaction as this palm is in a newly dug hole..

but from day 2 i started covering this barrel with the palm, using a plastic or polythene sheet.and i used to open it when the rain stopped & when it was sunny & dry ! since my mind kept reminding me that it should not share the same fate as my washy filifera had during our wet winters.

But now we are in our early summer, but its raining as though we have an equitorial climate.hot sunshine during the day & it starts to rain after noon or at nights...!

its preety weired now.

Kris  :)

Got to start working out in the gymnasium Kris.....it will do wonders for you. I know, I sit hunched over numbers most of the day as well. Since I've started working out, I've noticed a big improvement physically and mentally.

I have really wanted to try this palm here as well. From what I understand, it will take some cold as well. My soil here has much less clay than yours, so drainage is pretty well unimpeded. Maybe I will try some after seeing how well yours is growing. Love the color so far.

Dear Kris:

I have a couple Medemia seedlings too (a little older than yours) and I've put them in full sun on sandy medium recently. I'll have to take pictures this weekend. They are starting to grow much faster now,  jumping to the palmate leaf stage.

I hope you recover from your shoulder and neck pain soon. Gym and massage are good advices I guess...

Dear David  :)

thanks for the suggestion,i will start some work out, right urnestly...And i did not know that you are too a fan of this palm,if you had hinted this to me earlier..out of the 9 sprouted ones,i would have sent to you few of the germinated onces since for me 2 or 3 live specimens will to do..just in case they rot after placing then in ground, and one for our horticulture society..since i must tell openly no one other than me seems to be that palm crazy in entire india... :D And i do not know the reason, since even clayton accepts this point since he has lots of friends & contacts in india..who gave him feed back on the nurseries & palm sales in south india.

Dear Brother Gileno  :)

Thanks for the concern & suggestion.... :) I would love to see your palm stills soon ! very curious to see its leaf colour since mine is very close to breha or bismarkia at the moment ?

kris and Others,

When Medemia seed first became available an estimated 10 years ago from Martin and Toby, I thought it would be a "slam dunk". Seeds are very easy to germinate. It's getting them stepped up to the next size pot that's the problem. With my first batch of seeds I have 98% losses during transplanting. Subsequent batches had similar results. I think this is a species where the seed should be germinated in a very large pot from the beginning. Or, perhaps a peat moss pot that can be planted directly (without removal of the plant and roots) would work for this species. They had deep primary tap roots. I talked to a fellow who used large diameter tall black plastic pipe 3 feet long. They grew well, but I have no idea how he removed them for putting the plant in the ground. Keep us informed on your successes. I agree with Bill: don't overwater.

Dear Friends :)

Today i want to add few more stills of another 'Medemia Argun' that is also of the same age group but was living miserably in a small terracotta pot.Since initially i though that if my M.A survives the planting in the ground operation..then i thought i would gift the other to some deserving garden or park here.but the M.A living in the small pot was showing signs of stress and would not grow at all.

So i had to do this repotting work for this baby !

And here are the visuals for you :)

1) here is the medium sized blue barrel, which has washed river sand coarse grade as the predominent soil medium. And i must say that this barrel has commenced its second innings, since previously it played host to a phoenix rupicola, which is now planted in the ground. So i thought why not reuse the same barrel for a different palm.

post-108-1239549457_thumb.jpg

2) and here is this little baby ! :)

post-108-1239549479_thumb.jpg

3) a close-up of that pot & its name tag which has been painted yellow using oil based ennamel paint

post-108-1239549535_thumb.jpg

4) after watering the pot after 5 minutes we gently pulled out this baby..

post-108-1239549665_thumb.jpg

5) based on the above palm's grouth,we dug a hole in the soil medium in this blue barrel

post-108-1239549761_thumb.jpg

6) a birds eye view..

post-108-1239549818_thumb.jpg

7) now we gently lowered this palm into the pit we have dug up already

post-108-1239549897_thumb.jpg

8) we then started to refill the sides with the soil medium that we had dug up from this barrel initially...

post-108-1239549976_thumb.jpg

9) and this is how it looks after flushing this barrel with ample water and we also check wheather the drain holes are all functioning okay..

post-108-1239550068_thumb.jpg

And i will post updates of the above palms in the months to come,as to how they are doing ! :)

Love,

Kris :)

No much grouth seen in the bigger palm...inspite the climate being hot & dry this summer...no extrodinary grouth seen, but year round grouth is quite satisfactory ! :) But the leaf colour is far nearer to a B.Armada with yellow fronds. :hmm:

Dear Jack :)

Thanks for droping by and keying in your comments...I must say that these seeds came to me as gift for my order of other palm seeds. And i must say that out of 10 seeds around 8 or 9 did germinate. :greenthumb: and i distributed most of these to friends who love exotic palms and i have retained just 2 for my personal use.The one that is fairly big will be planted in the ground soon after the rains & the other one is just a back-up just in case if the planted palm rots.

And i must say that RPS.com has a fine supplier of these seeds (good source).

Lots of love,

Kris :)

I took photos of my one-leaf Medemia (near dusk, so quality isn't the best). The leaf is bluish and has an unusual texture. I also have two more Medemia seeds that have germinated but haven't shown a first leaf. My dear palm friend Simona sent them to me. They sell Medemia fruit in markets in Jordan. I think it will be a really cool palm.
