Dear Friends :)

This gives me immense pleasure to meet you all through this lovely thread, where i have tried to give step by step illustrations for those who are new to palm growing..And each time,i try to improvise new methods which are most apt for our hot tropical climate having high coastal humidity influence. So the medium is constantly kept as porous as possible for easy drainage of excess of water..

Today iam going to show you how to plant or repot a Copernicia hospita/Blue Yarey Palm in a large sized plastic pot.And the seeds were from Rps.com And i had purschased these seeds in small quantites, say the pouch contained around 10 to 12 seeds i think and of that 8 to 9 germinated in 3 months time.Since iam not a nursery guy i did not need to buy in large quantities either.

In the following post there are visuals and are mostly self explinatory,so you wan't find much of a problem to understand the standard planting procedure..

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

The Plastic bottle seen above,is measure first with help of a stick or a metal rod.Markings are made and then we begin with the digging work inside the new plastic pot !

post-108-1233726363_thumb.jpg

Here you can see the metal stick i have used to measure the needed dept for planting that C.Hospita sapling..

post-108-1233726492_thumb.jpg

The Dug up sandy soil is filled in a metal pale/Bucket..which is later used to fill back this pit.

post-108-1233726895_thumb.jpg

post-108-1233726943_thumb.jpg

post-108-1233727046_thumb.jpg

Now lets see how we set this palm into that pit,the outer plastic sleeve is not removed yet, purely for convience sake & for saftey of no damaging those tender roots..

post-108-1233727088_thumb.jpg

Here is a still taken after watering this new pot,and i was checking if the soil is caving in..But since the soil is predominently sandy, there was no soil downward moment at all.. :)

This is a still taken 2 to 3 days after this mainatnence work ! :hmm:

This(C. hospita) is one of my must have palms. The leaflet symmetry and color of an adult is stunning. Even this little baby is showing a nice hue, fantastic!

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Kris, as beautiful a palm as Copernicia hospita is, I can certainly understand why you wanted one of these Cuban palms in your collection. Initially I found it to be a bit slow in growing but once established in the ground it has grown well and is now almost as tall as I am (1.83 m -6 ft.).

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Kris,

I agree, the videos are nice, with your narrative and the birds singing in the background, much more enjoyable than still pictures.

Dear Friends,

Here is a video update of this palm & I was forced to plant this palm in the ground since the plastic pot in which this palm was growing is damaged due to constant exposure to full sunlight. And i did not have the privilege of surplus ranch hands this time. But did manage to get it from our roof top garden to ground floor with help of one assistant.

And this video was shot using GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. And iam still learning how to use its settings & editing. The video is bit shaky kindly bear with me....And some of the accessories are yet to come like head mount & chest mount harness for this camera. So the videos do lack the desired feel that we all expect !

Iam a quick learner, future videos would be better... :winkie:
