Dear Friends :)

Welcome to this thread, where you can find step by step illustrations of the repotting procedure we have followed,in repotting of the Copernicia alba/Caranday Palm.

And i must first thank joseph's(Ortanique.Com)for sending these seeds & few other seeds as gift for joining the IPS.And i have got around 90% germination rate from the Copernica Alba seeds sent to me.And the visuals that you are going to see in the following post is of a sapling rised from those seeds ! :)

As i always keep telling that, the illustrations are all self explinatory..but in case you have any doubts, please feel free to ask..

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

Kris, great work once again!, this palm will grow great for you I am sure. I recieved a palm from Scott in Tampa of this species and it has grown well for me even through winter it slowly grows and looks good in the cold.

I believe it likes drier condition so keep an eye on it in your monsoons.

It´s nearly impossible to overwater this palm species since it always grows near water,in places that are flooded in summer or soils with very high water table.

I saw mature palms totally surrounded by 1 meter high water in there habitat in the ´´Pantanal´´ in Mato Grosso do Sul. So,water is what they need!

Kris,i always like to repot my palms not planting it deeper than they were growing before....

This sapling looks a little burrowed after transplanted :hmm: ........

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!

Alberto,

thanks fr the information regarding C. alba. Most of what i read never discussed the watering requirements and I just figured it liked drier instead of wetter conditions. plus the waxy leaf usually means it comes from a dry area and is able to withstand heat and dry wind. am I correct?

but it apparently has the ability to tolerate som summer seasonal flooding as well. what are the soil conditions it grows naturally in?

take care

Luke

edit: just did a quick search on Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul. looks like a wonderful place! subtropical to tropical with rain and high water table like you said with likes and rivers. lots of vegetation supported by the climate. with up to 1500mm (60inches) a rain a year. Im sure Kris in India gets more than that though. we avg 63" here.

Dear Friends :)

Thanks for the comments & encouragement ! :) And here is a latest update of this C.Alba.And i have observed that its fonds has not browned much during this summer season. And soil mix is predominently sandy, but it does not seem to care much but i have watered this palm daily evenings at around 5.30 PM

this palm seem to love our hot wet coastal climate here..

This is a very nice palm, a nice green color. Good information here, these palms arent common, its good to learn that they are water lovers. This one should do very well in the ground for you Kris.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

An Update,I must tell that all the copernica varities have shown excessive grouth rate during our hot summers,While other palms in our collection showed light yellowing of leaves and very less of new spears..And this year summer it is very hot so i did not use any fertz as such.Once rainfall commences its going to be field work with fertz dosage.. :winkie:

I must add that the grouth rate is fentastic and these guys have damaged the plastic pots..I think i should have placed them in industrial barrel instead of std plastic pots.
