  1. I came across this palm last week in Sierra Vista, AZ (zone8b). It appears to be a Phoenix reclinata hybrid, possibly with P. dactylifera. It had cold damage on the fronds.

  3. a few months ago,oh lets just call it march,i visited a nearby garden with 2 large mature roystoneas. a few days later i began to realize that i had planted mine WAY too close to a large bismarckia so i thought: "hmmmm, who can i get to come dig these up for free." "before" shot.things are squeezed in like sausage in its casing. ewww. another with matt for scale.also he refused to move while i took the pic. the ground was fairly easy to dig. "haha,i can get matt to do anything!" i am thinking here.

  4. My Chambeyronia hookeri opened up a nice new red leaf so I decided to take some pics of it and it's big brother from New Caledonia, Kentiopsis oliviformis.

  5. I have a pair of Chuniophoenix- supposedly one of each. And it looks so far like that may be the case though the hainensis seems sort of nana-like. It started out about 1/3 the size of the nana, and now it is as tall, and leaf spread seems a bit larger... but it is flowering at a size I wouldn't have expected it to... so now I am wondering again if I just have two nanas. First photo is Chuniophoenix nana... next photo is what is supposed to be hainensis. last photo is a bad shot of both, though only way I could fit them into the same shot was to stand above them, so not a great photo.

  6. Here's part 2 of my garden update on my blog. THe blogging software couldn't handle so many photos so I had to split the update into 2 parts. Here's the link: http://freakofnaturezzz.blogspot.com/2010/06/garden-update-year-05-part-2.html

  7. Good to see you planted your Amherstia already. They are happier in the ground, especially that size!! Is it marcotted or from seeds?? Mine is nowhere near that big and I have to plant it first... BTW, maybe you should put temporary shade over those A. ipot. You don't want to burn all the leaves... Regards, Ari

  8. Hello everyone - I found a new nursery that has an enviable collection of palms. After a gruelling two hour journey in the summer heat, these are what I brought home. Dwarf Golden Coconut (C. nucifera) -- I just can't get enough of the yellow leaf bases Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) Carpentaria acuminata Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi) And finally... an african oil palm -- though I'm having second thoughts since I read online that these get pretty huge. I wanted to get a few spiny species too but it's too dangerous to plant in my lawn.

  11. Yes, it's true. Elais are getting huge. Here are a pic of some of mine in different ages.(I have more than 60 of them in my compound). The two small in the foreground I planted myself about 4 or 5 years ago. In my yard they are growing like weeds - everywhere. And they tolerate exteme drought (4-5 months without water) and full sun even as seedlings. Regards Mpiodi

  12. Sure. Here they are. I'm afraid it's right after the dry season so the grass cover is all gone though. The East // My two faithful royals. The North // My New Arrivals (including a traveller's 'palm') all waiting in queue to be planted The West // L to R (excluding potted plants): Araucaria columnaris, Mango, dwarf cocount, and Polyalthia longifolia The South // Mostly Murraya koenigii, Mango, and Syzygium cumini (jamun) Also, an uninvited Areca seedling spouts beside my succulents And my caryota urens (fishtail) palm sandwiched between two unpruned Ixora marquesensis
