Nothing beats having an entire loose Washingtonia skirt come down on you when you're tied in.

Sadly, quite a few climbers have died from suffocating under the weight. :(

Washingtonia leaf in the eye.  I scratched the eye.  About 4 hours later in the middle of the night I woke up in shear agony. This was the year I tried an HMO. in the 80's

I returned to the Dr. 3 or 4 times.  Dr. was about worthless,  he kept acting like the reoccuring wound was self inflicted. --- Finally I went to an eye doctor out of my own pocket and got sufficient care so it would heal thoroughly.

I went through a episode with a Phoenix reclinata spine in the shoulder. They do not show up on X rays. I went back 3 or 4 times as the wound never healed Dr. s were better but about 3 months later the spin jumped out from the wound 2 " long.

Med fan thorn to the nuckle and knew it was in there but it was dark out and it broke off under the skin.. couldnt bend my nuckle for about two weeks when it finally swelled up and I could finally see where it was.. I got a razor knife and sliced it open and it shot out, what relief that brought me... like I had a brand new hand... the thorn was about 3/8 of a inch long..

I guess I have been lucky.  The worst I can remember was stepping on Astrocaryum throns while hiking in the forest with rubber sandles on.    I got some jungle boots after that.

I have been both careful and lucky.

To me:

Little livistona spines in the fingers, can't remove and you end up with lumpy finger syndrome.

A poke in the eye -HARD! -- with a Rhopie baueri spear as I leaned downward.  Nasty bloodshot eyes.

Other people:

Matt in SD with a Phoenix spine somewhere (anywhere sucks, I'm sure he'll chime in);

The window washer in San Bernardino who fell from his catwalk -- 9 floors up -- and, instead of landing to death on the sidewalk, found himself alive but hideously impaled in a CIDP.

OUCH!

I get the willies thinking about either.  I'm wimpy and proud of it!

I had a feeling Dave would remember my Phoenix reobelinii thorn incident.  I think I posted when it happened then again when a thread like this came up a couple years ago.

I was cutting down a giant bird of paradise that was right next to the pigmy date.  The BOP trunk started to fall on the power line (I think I later realized it was just the phone line) and I jumped around to stop it.  My arm went full force into the pigmy date and all of a sudden my hand wasn't working.  There was a lump in the skin of my forearm and then a little puncture wound about an inch away.  The spine had gone in and shifted the skin as it went, then lodged in the bone, broke off, and the sking went back to it's normal position.  So with my one working hand I had to get the BOP safely down, and then I waited for my wife to get home cause I didn't want her to wonder where I was.

At the emergency room, it took the doctor about 30 minutes to get the spine out after cutting a hole.  The broken end was under a couple layers of muscle that had to be pushed aside to get to it, then it was stuck in the bone so hard he went through several tools before finding one that could grip it hard enough.  Basically used a pair of pliers in the end and had to pull really hard.  Sure felt nice once it was out and my hand worked fine right away.  The spine was about 1 1/2 cm long.

Honestly I would take this all over again before getting a thorn in the eye.   It makes for a good story, but it really was not that bad, and it stopped hurting the second they got it out.

No order:

Cut into my finger with an electric hedge trimmer, while clearing "disney" that was overgrowing a palm trunk.

Climbing a garden wall, I slipped and cut my shin almost to the bone on the edge of a legacy block. Still have nice scar.

Digging up a 3ft tall pygmy triple took over 2 hours, and I pulled a groin muscle that hurt for 6 months.

Thank God I have no Phoenix or Livistona stories to share.

I had a CIDP thorn go about 1" into my temple as I was bending down pruning an older frond. As I backed up my agave stabbed me in the shoulder. I now prune all my agave tips.

The most painful was when a randomn CIDP thorn which must have been pruned at an earlier date, shot through my sandal and went about 2" into my skin b/w the toes! Yeeyow!!!!

Matt!

Glad it resolved!

GADZOOKS, just reading that gives the willies.

Nota bene, everyone, Matt's was an accident, and not what I'd call a dumb one.

I plan every move around a phoenix with great care . . . .

I'm going to be removing some this year, sigh.
