Today, half of the rat pack made a quick visit to the garden of Rod Pattison mentioned in Jon's previous post. Rod collects a lot of unusual stuff, and a lot of variegated plants are growing in his garden in suburban Brisbane.

He also has other non-variegated palms in his garden. Here are a few photos from today.

The canopy created by Ron Pattison took 10 years to a point where he could really flood underneath with some special plants. So you really have to have patience, although you can plant along the way with those plants able to take varying degrees of sun etc.

Here's some more variegated palm pics, firstly that Pinanga again.

Variegated Rhapis were everywhere, if that's a money plant, as they say, Rod is a quadzillionaire.

Here's one amongst the foilage.

This is an inspirational garden in so many ways. Great to see you enjoyed it. Did you notice it was wall to wall plants, no hard landscaping? That to me shows a good knowledge of how to use the plants to best effect don't you think?

Exactly Jon, just the way I like, no formal anything, just pure natural look. It wouldn't be a bad spot to film "A midsummer night's dream" actually. Fairy nice indeed.

Dear ratpackers Col and Ari, there wasn't that much for sale you'd be interested in. Now move on with your lives okay  :P

While at first glance I would agree with the natural look, many of us locally have tried for at least a "path" for one good reason.

One of the pioneers of this "sport" lives in So Cal., Pauleen Sullivan. She has been wheelchair bound for a very good part of her life, while that did little to stop her world trips, whenever you are blessed that she makes a effort to show up at a home for a "tour", you can't help but feel miserable as this wonderful lady watches on as other "trudge back" to some places.

Its sad  enough that I'm gonna try to have some "path" to most areas here.

Colin may know of the Chamadorea named after her.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Excellent pictures Daryl!  Thanks for showing us some amazing variegated palms.  I would love to get a hold of a variegated Archontophoenix like that A alexandrae!

"No Hardscaping" usually means "not wheelchair accessable".  While not first in someones thoughts when doing a palm garden, due to Pauleen, its usually in our planning somewhere.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Gotcha now, thanks Bill. There was pathing all the way through, cleverly disguised due to massive planting and the natural colours of the paths themselves, a real pieces of magic here all across the garden. I'd say a wheelchair would get along most if not all the paths.

Glad to hear it Wal. I hope I can do the same.

Colin, I figured you would know of it, a particularly beautiful species I think, but a VERY hard grow.  :(   Had one, gone now.
