Today I planted a Jubaea that I germinated and was growing in a pot for +-5 years. I had two helpers! :)(Leonard and Lydia)

Here you can see a shot of two young Jubaeas of the same age. The palm in the ground was planted after one year in a pot. A big difference in growth.

I don´t know the normal growth of a Jubaea.... I only know they are slow

Is this normal for a 5 yo Jub in the ground?

PS on the 2nd shot you can also see a Butia x Jubaea F2 of the same age (a lot faster!),that shows a beautyfull gray-blue collor

Also I see you plant on mounds. this topic has beifly been touched on.  is this part of your property low lying? low water table? or you just want to increase drainage...can you explain your methods?

Thanks Kris!

I think a Butyagrus you plant for your own delight...but a Jubaea...?.... I like them when they haven´t a trunk yet. When they begin to form a little  trunk they look totally strange and oddy in my eyes. When they have a considerable trunk (lets say 5 meter) they begin to look beautifull and proportional again and when they are over sixty or hundred years they are superb!!! :D

So ,I hope my children will enjoy them better then I will!:)

Yes ,all my oldest palm grown from seeds are 5 years now.

I plant on mounds only palms that don´t like excessive humidity. The water table is low here on this place. We don´t have a dry period of the year, so summer or winter are rainy. Only August is the driest month. Some years it doesn´t rain in this month.

I  make a big hole and mix sand , more sandy soil, organic material etc to the soil and fill the hole again.

I have done this with Jubaea , Parajubaeas, Phoenix teophrastii,a Livistona decora(wrong lable! I thought it was a P.teophrastii)and Dypsis decipiens.

Alberto,

Thanks for the great pictures of your planting process and your helpers, also thanks for keeping us informed on what's happening in S. America. You and Guilano and Don are about our only sources of news in S. America.

You mention a Butia X Jubaea F2. Are you sure the F1 was not crossed with a Butia? The reason I ask is that my Butia X Jubaea proved to be self sterile, however it readily crossed with Butia. As I understand it an F2 may look like either of the parents, or it could carry on the characteristics of the F1. In other words the F2 could be quite veariable, while the F1's are fairly consistent in apperance.

I don't know if you've thought of this but maybe you can start a palm-scrap book of your plantings showing dates of germination, planting and pics to go along with it. Someday someone might find that historic info and the pictures very useful... Jv

Alberto,

It looks to me that your Jubaea is growing at a good rate, as fast as they can grow at that size. The more the trunk swells, the faster they grow.

Two of my Jubaeas have 3 bloom spathes emerging. This will give Patrick 6 to work with, and there may be more not showing yet. I expect he will be crossing with Syagrus, He has tried with Parajubaea before with no success, but I expect he will try again. I don't know what the other possibilities are, maybe Bujubaea?

Hi Alberto

Your Jubaea is really nice!

Once established, Jubaea chilensis can grow quite fast. In my experience, only seedlings growing in pots are slow. When planted in good soil, in a sunny spot, and sheltered from strong winds, Jubaea can considerably speed up its growth after a very few years. The 3 pictures below document the growth of a Jubaea growing in southern Switzerland. The first picture was taken in March 2003, the second during the last winter (2010/11), and the third picture shows the same Jubaea during the summer of 2011 (pictures 2 and 3 were taken by Gabriel, a very good friend of mine).
