has anyone stumbled upon a varigated sabalminor.  we have seen some varigated palmetto in the ft myers, fl area.

what about serenoa repens?? Rhapidophyllum hystrix - needle palm?

I think these would be great variation of already tried and true palms.

Sabal minor for sure, and on this forum.  Also heard of vareiegated  Rhapidophyllum hystrix (see link below) but it seems to be on the rare side.  Never heard of a variegated serenoa repens, but maybe someone can enlighten us.

JD thanks for posting this. You were the one who got me thinking about variegated hardy palms when you showed us this sabal last year. You caught the varigated bug I know, you been sniffing out anything varigated :D

have you came up with a percentage of how many are variegated from seed on this palm? any seedling photos?

We planted several thousand seeds off of that tree into several buckets. So far, out of one community bucket one seedling did come up yellow, but appeared weak and scrawny, and after a couple weeks it just shriveled up and died. I have a feeling that the percentage is going to be low, maybe .1% to .5% variegated. After hearing comments from other people who have grown seed from a variegated Sabal, it seems like the biggest obstacle is keeping the weak eophyll alive long enough for the root system and stem to develop.

We also have Caryota mitis variegata seedlings sprouting right now and they look more promising.

Just a word of caution when ya'll acquire the variegated palm of your dreams........

I transplanted a pretty large S. palmetto a few years ago, with some pretty prominent colour....and then i gave it a dose of fert, and it has never been as pretty, or the variegation as pronounced.

Some of the leaves lost nearly all of the variegation....i am still waiting to see if it acquires it again, since the petioles have the trait intact.

Found this small cluster of varigated sabal palmetto in SW Florida today. Several adults and multiple juveniles growing in close proximity. I collected about 1000 seeds that I'll put in liners to see what percent are green vs varigated. I wager that a large percent will be varigated because of their close proximity to each other. There were native cabbage palms a little ways away though. The adjacent property owner knows very little about them other than that they are unusual. Unfortunately, they are all directly below high voltage electric facilities so the local utility will cut them down when they grow a little taller.
