There are som fruiting specimens in my area but I am not sure at what size they were planted. In this area, one can plant a good sized coconut with a couple feet of trunk and have fruit for several years before the next big freeze. There are plenty of real coconuts, though, closer to the bay and beach that have stood the test of time. There a couple larger ones in a rough trailor park near here that I am sure were planted from bog box store sprouts many years ago, so they can be grown from sprouts to adult here if you get lucky. My coco was started as a ratty walmart sprout. Here is a pic from May 14, 2006:

ruskinPalms,

That's obviously a golden Malayan you have, and I bet it's about 15ft. tall now, since the photo was taken in 2006. I don't recall if you said in an earlier post if you lost it this past winter or not. It seems you guys had a worse winter this year than the Rio Grande Valley. Actually, our winter was unusually mild, but our spring has been a little chilly. That's global climate change for you. Ruskin, if I am not mistaken, is along the southeast part of Tampa Bay. Is that correct? I have seen some scraggly looking coconut palms in the Brandon area that were about 12-14ft. tall two summers ago. But I would expect that since Brandon is farther inland and thus cooler at night in the winter. If your palm is still alive, can you post a recent photo of it when you get a chance?

Thanks,

John
