Palms in movies

Recommended Posts

This topics was raised a few years ago, time to put it up again for input. I was inspired by watching the movie, "The Thin Red Line" once again, what a great flick.

Here's the locations of this film

Bramston Beach, Queensland, Australia

Cairns, Queensland, Australia

Daintree, Queensland, Australia

Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands

Honiara, Solomon Islands

Mossman, Queensland, Australia

Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia

San Pedro, Los Angeles, California, USA

This still is the very last scene in the movie before the credits roll up.

There's "Monster Island" from the Godzilla movies! Supposedly located in the Ogasawara Islands, home of Clinostigma savoryanum. How's that for palm & movie trivia?

I mentioned this before buy again, "It's a Wild Wild Wild World." (How many Wilds?)

And how exactly is this related to palms in movies ?

And what does "I mentioned this before buy again" mean ?

When Stanley Kubrick filmed "Full Metal Jacket" in 1987, they recreated Hue City, Vietnam, on a disused gasworks site near the River Thames, in East London, England. They also planted a couple of hundred palms brought in from Spain at a cost of $30,000.

On the non-war movie front, I might add the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Mutiny on the Bounty (or was is just called Bounty; the one with Mel Gibson).

I think Ken is actually referring to a 1963 Comedy Movie entitled "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!" It all centers around four palm trees. A real classic and funny as hell. You have to see it to believe it.

But John, "TwentyNine Palms, California" looks EXACTLY like that. I believe its named after a Washingtonia Oasis.

Very desolate though.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

No photos, but the TV show LOST has lots of great palm shots in Hawaii.

There was one funny scene where Locke was supposedly in Santa Monica in California, but the trouble was he was standing in front of two beautiful Areca catechu! Don't think they do too well in southern CA.

Any one remember that episode?

The palms at the captions of ''Killing fields'' Wall provided most probably are Livistona rotundifolia... :)

Au Pair 3 has some GREAT palms(plenty of Cocos,Corypha,BIG Copernicia, unusual Syagrus and others i dont remember right now but more or less, palms in every scene of the movie!) and was filmed from what i heard in the movie in CR...Man you know immediately you can have that look in your town unless you actually live in the tropics!:(

Give a look at "Ice Age 3"- I have watched it today (in 3D!) B) .

Below the ice there is a lost world with tropical vegetation and of course some dinosaurs. There are some really nice settings with fancy cartoon palms, somehow reminiscent of Phoenicophorium, Lodoicea, Licuala, Chambeyronia and Ptychosperma. Some palms have an unreal texture, typical of aroids. There are even some blue cycads with cones, and some gigantic, weird "hybrids" of banana trees and tree ferns. Bromeliads too... and a mammouth-eating carnivorous plant

Forrest Gump had some potentially fake SE Asia palm scenes but had palms nonetheless.

I'm suprised no one thought of Arnie the govenor of California Schwarzenegger in PREDATOR ,when they mow down half the Costa Rican rainforest trying to kill the predator. I feel a little sad about all the palms that were destroyed shooting that scene! "If it bleeds,we can kill it"...."What's got Billy spooked?"....Cheers Mike Green (NEWCAL)

Yeah, let's not forget the uncountable number of bad movies with plastic palm trees, often trying to recreate the Tropics in

Southern California, yuck!

Seems to me I once saw an old movie featuring a desert oasis surrounded by Cocos. :) Only in Hollywood.

I agree "Proof of Life" is a great movie for palmophiles, partly because of the rarity of a lot of the palms shown --Parajubaea cocoides and some Ceroxylons among others.

I hope this bumps the topic up where it will be seen -- it is quite an old thread. Last night (July 21, '09) was the season opener of the 'Torchwood' series on BBC America. It is filmed and takes place in Cardiff, Wales. And close to the opening scenes is a healthy Phoenix canariensis just beginnig to trunk, growing near the waterfront in the central city.

Surprising, but certainly possible I guess, in that maritime influenced northern locale!
