With all of Bobby's enthusiasm, New York State should have a palm society chapter. Bobby, you should start a chapter as you seem to be "infecting" some of your friends and neighbors with the palm bug. I'm dead serious.

The website would definitely be step one. When people see photos of what can be done in your area, others will join.

Ok,

I was wondering.... should it be a New York State chapter or a NORTHEAST chapter (including like Maryland, DC, New Jersey, New York, Conn, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, & Maine) or just a Long Island Chapter.... Not really sure if there would be much interest away from the coastal areas, but you never know.... I know there is alot of interest in my area because we're on an Island and have alot of beach which naturally goes with palms.

Bobby,

If this is something you're seriously contemplating, keep the following in mind:

1) a minimum of 10 members in order to apply to the IPS for affiliation

2) all officers must be IPS members (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary)

3) we use the word "affiliate" rather than "chapter", since "chapter" implies that the organization in question is somehow subordinate to the IPS, which is not the case. All local affiliates are independent organizations.

4) name, and geographical coverage, would be entirely up to you, or whoever decides to get this new affiliate going. Keep in mind that the larger the area, the more difficult it's going to be to organize meetings and get people together. "Long Island Palm Society" might be too local of a name (even though the acronym is tempting! ). "New York Palm Society" or "New York State Palm Society" are probably better choices. And if you're thinking of attracting NJ members as well, then adding NJ to the name would probably be a good idea. ("New Jersey & New York Palm Society" for instance).

You sure about this Bo, aren't we talking about an interest group ? Encourage these guys

1) Don't apply for affiliation, I'm in a palm society which is not affiliated to IPS.

2) Why ?

3) Not applicable, not affiliated, it's a palm interest group for now.

4) I think the singing boy from New York City would be able to come up with a name

That's just my personal opinion and not the opinion of any others because I love the idea of what's being mooted here and nothing against IPS and/or Bo.

I could be wrong but I maybe right, I maybe crazy.

IPS affiliation is, needless to say, completely voluntary and not something the IPS is attempting to push down the throats of anyone. The idea is that by working together, local Palm Societies and the IPS will all benefit by spreading the word about palms in general, local Palm Societies, PalmTalk and the IPS. True, you don't need to belong to the IPS, or even to a local affiliate, in order to do this, but for the most part I believe we're generally better off by working together.

I agree BO, and am honored to be affiliated to the IPS and its wealth of knowledge. Also, it's sort of like the way the United States are - separate but together under the umbrella of the Federal Government... When you're united, you're strong..

Now as far as a name goes, I REALLY like "Long Island Palm Society" (LIPS), but I can't use it because there already is a LIPS (Long Island Parrot Society) of which I'm a member :) , NYPS sounds ok, but I would rather start out local (on LI) because we really are kind of disconnected to the mainland of New York... Most New Yorkers don't even consider us as New Yorkers - we're Long Islanders... On the other hand, I don't know how much interest there really is west of the Hudson, and to Include New Jersey, well that's like Saying Texas is Still part of Mexico..lololol

Whatever you do Bobby, I think you have a great fulfilling project on your hands and nothing but the best of luck to you.

What about "LIPACS". And include cycads like we do over here, then it's the Long Island Palm and Cycad Society.

Bobby,

I like the idea of your interest in starting a new affiliate of the IPS up in NY. Therefore, I nominate you as president to get this thing off the ground and running..........anyone second it? But on a serious note, I wish you all the best and hope that others will learn and hear about this. Maybe a notice at a local garden club, or other plant society group could be posted and MAYBE an organized tour to your house could be possible. This would open some eyes and generate some talk. Who knows.

ooooh, yeah, Excellent Wal.... I like it too.... LIPACS - that's PERFECT...

Jeff, thank you so much for the words of encouragement - Coming from someone who has achieved as much as you, it's a real compliment.
