Beautiful, I love to see the bigger stuff going in the ground..........love the instant gratification. Why would anyone let any of these leave their yards. I'll bet the recipients are happy.........tell me your the recipient :) Beautiful........wish I lived in South Florida or somewhere warmer.

All of these plams are "easy" to move. These are all in their "old" home now as I have just begun to work on them. I will bring them to the nursery after the dig and "harden" them off. (Pull new roots). Most of them will find a new home in another country.

Nice Ken,

You should keep this thread going and add to it every time you move a palm. Be interesting to see the process you go through to give them new homes.

You mentioned they go to other country's, Where do most go?

Nice looking palms Ken. How do you come accross these? Are these from other collectors or just palms you find in peoples yards? How do you find buyers?

As you see in my "personal message" I buy palms from peoples yards, trees too. Been at it for 25 years. Over that time I have sold palms to many different place. Atlanta Botanical Gardens has a giant Bismarkia in the center of its atrium for example. Recently I am selling to a client that is a landscape designer that has used many of my palms in the Bahamas. At one time I supplied hundreds of specimen palms to a private garden in Palm Beach County. Some local jobs where estate houses are on the water in places like like Gables By The Sea and in the Florida Keys have used my stuff.

I will post some more pix when I get a chance. Off to dig on a few Strangler Figs today!

I have accompanied Ken on some of his endeavors, it is fun watching the "operation".

I see you are representing the East Goulds/222nd street turf? You almost get a good view of Mount Trashmore from the area. :winkie:

Thats right Kingfish. Only problem is none of the GANG has offered to help me. If they only knew.

I did hear that the GANG stole one of Steve Sterns Coccothrinax thingamigers from his swale. Pulled it out with a truck or suntin. For sure they killed it.

I guess some lectures about proper transplant tecnique are in order at the basketball court!

Ken, just add some "in process" pics so we know whats going on. Everyone could use a few tips. Now you have our mouths watering.

I think I goofed up the pix. Sorry.

Kingfish needs Pollo every day to keep working at FTBG. It gives him a certian "Southern" feeling which goes well at the garden!

Ken I have a few questions re: Corypha. At what point (size) would you think the bud is above ground? At 3 ft of wood, 4 maybe? 4 ft is what I use for Sabal, 3 ft for Biz. If I know the bud is above ground I just pop'em out when I want to. If it's below then I root prune.

Tala, You dig Bizzies without a root prune? What kind of soil? Got pix?

It is interesting you ask about when the bud gets "above ground". In palms with remote germination and ones that pull their trunk undrground there are stages in the lower trunk development that impact the way I move them. They can be moved but knowing what is going on underground is the key.

Palm with "heels" do not have trunks like other palms untill they get older and even then they will sometimes still have the heel left over, absorbed INTO THE TRUNK!

Most palms that are hard to transplnt when young are also hard to transplant when old, in my experience. Tala you think this may not be the case?

P.S. Please ignore Lefty. I appologise for the fact that he loves me but not Steve.

wish I knew Steve, I would prob. think that is funny ...

this a budget operation to be sure, no pics. I gotta start doin that tho'... soil is nothing but sugar sand after a ft or so; I would build a box around them as I dig to try and hold the soil. The Biz are way easier to move once big, the caveat being you have to splint the bud so it doesn't move around. Young ones will sulk for a yr or so but regrow, much more touchy before the bud gets above ground.

I have a C.utan mebbe 20 ft or so overall hgt. in front yd., am thinking about finding a new home for it. Just too big for me to mess with anymore. Also have a canary date w/ about 10 ft of wood I need to move too. I planted the utan as a lark, thought this far north & inland it would live for a yr or so, freeze off and die. Then I could say I tried at least. No one else ever got one to grow this big around here. But the sucker just keeps on coming back, 25f cold, 3 hurricanes in one summer, nothing stops it. It should be twice the size it is now if it were planted down there cuz I only get about 6 months of growth up here but ... anyway I'm not sure the bud is above ground so I'm not going to mess with it until I know for sure. Would be kinda funny if I dug it, gave it a new home and then it flowered ...

Just like Bumble Bee Tuna?

It is true, I often wander to the Pollo on 90th St and US1 for some Ropa Viejo and Yucca. You have to ask for the garlic sauce.....always!

Here is me going through the drive thru. As you can see it is a classy joint with Bentley owners not an uncommon sight.

They have only top notch fresh canned tuna (in water) and other assorted meats, only at the local Pollo here on 90th St. It almost surpasses the quality of tuna at a certain Italian restaurant in Palm Beach.
