Well, some of you may remember this...

Which a month or so later went to this...

And as of a day or two ago became this.

bifidacone003.jpg

I'm worried because the lone leaf looks like this.

So, two questions:

1. I believe it is a male?

2. Since I don't have a female version nearby, can I just cut it off to let it get some "oomph" for another leaf?

Comments? Directions?

Looks to be getting too much heat in that corner? Poe-see-blay?

I put it there to get some heat! I suspect it doesn't get over 85F.

Possibly it's due to the energy being expended in producing the cone?

Dear Bill :)

it looks to me as normal, since you mentioned that you have move this cycad suddenly from one area to another to ficilitate it to get more heat...so this sudden change is the result of the leaf yellowing ! this had happened to me with all my cycads, when i moved them from dark shady location to our roof top garden, where it gets heat & sunlight directly...initially their leaves dried-up..but in just few weeks time all those guys put out new leaf flush and it looks fabulous.the leafs are shinning and the cycas looks more beautiful than ever...

thanks for those hi res stills of your cycads...

lots of love,

Kris :)

Like I told you in person Bill, I have always been told by those in-the-know to leave it. Cutting it off or even pulling out the cone before it expires is like pulling off a palm leaf base before it is ready. You are opening it up for fungus and other issues. But if you really want to cut it, do it t the top of the peduncle.

Also, I bet moving it from Phil's greenhouse to full sun does not help with appearance. :)

Most Greenhouse stuff only takes a minor hit here in mild Oceanside. I think its the same as Matt's guess.

No comments on the sex yet?

Bill, It was cool checking out your extensive container palm garden the other day. You have alot of very cool palms and some cycads! I am no expert, I understand however if you cut off the cone it will stop using energy for reproduction(which it takes huge amounts of energy to produce cones). It will use that energy for leaf and root production instead! Treat the cut area with a systemic fungicide and the plant will thrive. I use captan fungicide Bill. Does any one have a female cone for you to pollinate? Bill even a cycas revoluta would be a very cool cross!!! What ever you chose to do the cycad will do fine. I believe you have E. natalensis squibe like mine. A very nice leaf form! Regards, Randy

Bill,

Unless your intending on using your plant for reproduction purposes, then I would definitely cut the cone off. It's just going to drain energy off the plant that you don't need to happen.

Here are my thoughts on this:

1. The cone is definitely male.

2. Cutting the cone will not harm the plant; rather, it will reduce the plant's energy expenditure and possibly allow for a quicker leaf flush.

3. The fried leaflets look like either sun burn, cold burn, or salt burn (could also be from too much chemical fertilizers).

4. This species would perform best in a sheltered location that receives partial, filtered light.

Hope this helps.

Not that Jody needs any backup, but what he said absolutly worked for me... I had a Zamia Pumila that I was wanting a new flush out of. I waited and waited and nothing. Finally it shot up a cone in late Fall. It stunted growth until this Spring when the cone continued back to growing. After it got big enough I cut it off. With in 2 weeks after cutting the cone, I got a new flush. From my personal experience, if your not going to use the cone for pollination, cut it off.

Kansas, nice of you to have a coontie up there. The Jeff and Jody approach definitely works for these little cycads. Small specimens straining to support a cone may in fact expire.

Also, as a reminder, the leave was already starting to "turn" when I got it. This pic was taken a day or two after I brought it home. Definately worse now, but it did throw a cone after all!

With a month plus to whine over his "maleocity" cut off, and the leaf too for that matter, I took this pic an hour ago. Looks good so far!!

Bill,

There would be no reason why this plant wouldn't continue to look good. There was no reason to have kept that cone on. NOW......go out and find a nice place in the yard and plant your first cycad. :)

Bill I was talking to the famous Cycad PHD Dr Zhivago and he told me a Cycas bifida with two emerging leaves is like a human with three arms. He recommends you cut one off as other Cycas bifida's might make fun of it when they reach their teenage years. Just thought I would pass that along.

Bill, I agree with Jeff. Find a good place for that nice plant and put it in the ground! It will be so much happier in the ground. Do it! However WAIT first! Let the leaves harden up before you plant it. Take pics. Regards, Randy
