Mites, Scale, and Aphids

Terry, it occured to me that you might have a problem with the glassy winged sharp shooter. Insecticide won't work because the larvae are under the surface of the leaves. A light oil will deter the adults from laying eggs. I've had problems with these guys on Citrus.

Matty - Aren't those what almost took out all the vineyards in Temecula 10 years ago?

My pests are obvious: Snails, Spider Mites, and Scale. Seen them all up close. The scale on the Chams looked like frickin' trilobites. Occasionally a grasshopper chews on my parajub'. I might have a minor aphid problem with the bamboo, now that I'm seeing ants. I'm paranoid about plant diseases though. By the time you see them you usually have a mess to deal with.

Most pesticide data sheets [MSDS] give data on toxicity to fish. Select the one least toxic to fish. merrill

I have been using insecticidal soap lately, really cleaned up a mite problem.

I prefer the insecticidal soap as unlike many pest control chemicals, it non toxic to humans. Unfortunately, I know too much about pesticides in general, many of which have been derived from the first nerve agents used in warfare. The insecticidal soap also cleans the leaflets up nice, they look great a few days after application.

I've used Bayer's Tree and Shrub product (feed and insecticide) and found out it's harmful to environment (kills bees and birds). Ugh! such a great product but even banned in other countries :  (

I'm battling scale on a Sago. I did get all the scale off but they reappear. Clipped some fronds off, washed the rest with mild soap and water, picked off the scale stuck on, and trying Neem oil. I think I also need to treat the ground around it with insecticide in the soil.
