Cool, I thought it was just Ceratozamias that opened with orange or bronze new leaves, but that looks more Encephalartos like.

Usually I see that when burnt from touching a hot surface. Either way, it was there when I got it.

Hi Bill, Nice pic! I have a blue E. arenarius that is starting to flush. It might be orange also. I believe that your cycad is also E. arenarius. It's hard to tell when there small. I'll take a pic next week and post i  t on this thread if it's a orange flush. Watch out Bill you too could become cycotic for cycads!!!! Regards, Randy

This is almost certainly the result of a nutritional deficiency. I wrote an article on this a few years ago for the Cycad Newsletter. You can read it on the Cycad Society website:

http://www.cycad.org/documents/Haynes-golden-cycads.pdf

I don't remember now which nutrient is involved because it has been awhile since I read the article... so I guess you can read it for yourself and decide.

The label says "trispinosis", but it doesn't look overly so.

Just a point of information here... While it may at first glance be aesthetically appealing or interesting, an orange flush on a plant that typically flushes a green or purplish color is not a good thing; rather, it means that there is some kind of problem with the plant -- most likely a nutritional deficiency -- that needs to be corrected. Sometimes this type of thing goes away on its own, but often times it does not.

Bill, I have no doubt that Jody has given you great info, however there are healthy orange flushes out there. Go to new websites. Register for the new cycad forum then check out encephalartos pics, click on hildibrante. enjoy!!! I tried to cut and paste for this thread with failure  Regards, Randy

Hey Randy. I wholeheartedly agree that there are absolutely incredible orange, red, bronze, chocolate brown, pink, lime green, blue, purple, etc. flushes in various species of cycads (I have seen every color in the aforementioned list), and if this is normal for the species, then it is a site to behold. However, when a plant that should normally flush green or purplish begins to flush orange or yellow it means there is something wrong with the plant. That is all I was saying.

Jody, If you read what I posted I agreed with you that external problems can cause a flush to be the wrong color. I also stated it could be natural. I value what you posted. Regards, Randy
