Licuala ferruguinea

I had gotten this plant under the name Licuala "timika" about 18 months ago, and recently have been looking at it, and it is growing on me. Someone had told me this name was given to L. ferruguinea before it had been described taxonomically. Is anyone else growing this plant? I remember RPS had seeds of it about 9 months ago. It has a nice bronzish underside and is solitary so far. It actually has been a relatively fast and easy grow for a Licuala.

Hello Christian,

I wasn't aware that these two names were the same plant. I own 3 or 4 small plants myself, so that's good as I always wanted to know more about these.

Christian,

Thanks for the pictures. I bought some seeds from RPS last year and got a good result (9 out of 10). It looks like an easy grower for me at this point. The first leave look a big thicker than other Licuala. How much sun do you give him?

I have one in the ground for about 7 years now. I think it doesn't get enough sunlight as it is a slow grower for me.

It has been in 25% sun (morning) but I have a feeling it could take a lot more. I have left it be for weeks at a time and let it live out natural rain and whatnot, it is not a fickle plant, thats for sure. It did have an iron deficiency(looked like) about a year ago but grew out of it in one leaf.

Paul-

Good news, it will grow here. This is mine that the spear pulled on earlier this year, and it about to open a new leaf with a spike coming up behind.

Sat outside this last winter unprotected. (old pic here) (eventually- my Firefox is freaking out now :( )

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Bill, I think you and I have two different plants. Yours has more, deeper segments, and is a lighter green. The segments on your plants are also narrower. I have seen that plant sold as Licuala sp. "Narrow Leaf". I'll take a picture of the one I have, possibly the same as yours.

Could it just be the harder life it leads here at the "Container Ranch"?

Bill,

Sorry, but you have been "duped" again. Your plant isn't Licuala sp. Timika.

Unhappy Licualas do throw narrower/more pleated leaves here in SoCal. I've noticed that.

Maybe to an extent, but Bill's palm is definitely not L. sp "Timika". The leaves are way too narrow.
