We just remodeled our house a few years ago and while landscaping the yard I caught the palm bug bad. I have been buying palms steadily since. Almost everything has been planted this summer and is still acclimating so it is not looking its best, but hope you enjoy.

Nice job. I love seeing new designs and plantings.

One thing I can tell you from experience, I doubt those Cycads will make it another two years out front. Just takes one drive by. I lost $1000s in my front yard in one night. Living in a gated community did not even help. I don't want to be a Nervous Nellie or Chicken Little guy, but I just wanted to give you some insight. Encephalartos Whitelockii are worth some cash. I took all remaining cycads of value out of my front and now have things like altensteinii and natalensis out front.

Very nice selection, and look very well cared for. You have all the Dypsis I'm looking to get.

That elephant ear is about to give you trouble. They get that size, and then hatch more babies than the queen in Aliens. I dig mine out last Summer, used RoundUp, and they still keep multipying.

WOW that looks great!

Your syagrus looks very nice indeed. You have certainly caught the palm bug. I would heed the advice Len has offered, cycads make easy targets for theft.

If Cycad theft worries you, maybe consider scraping the dirt away from around the surface of the plant, burying some wire mesh or chain link in a 3-4 foot radius, tacking it down with rebar bent into a U shape and then replacing the dirt and mulch again.

I may have fueled Aaron's addiction a bit since we live so close to each other. You've done a great job in the front yard, I can't wait to see what it looks like in 5 years. I'm excited for you to get the back yard going as well. Nice pics!!

Very nice Matt. Those cycads will disappear some day some way! When big enough they will wrap a chain around the caudex and pull it outta the ground with a truck. You will have to post pics once a year now so we can enjoy your paradise maturing! Regards, Randy

Sorry to hear about that Len. That must eat you up having your cycads stolen. I believe that what goes around comes around and I am sure that the thieves lives will be worse off in the end. I have recieved the same advice from just about everyone, but I guess I am just stubborn and will probably end up learning the hard way. I have a vision for what I want my yard to look like and I just do not want criminals to tell me how to plant my garden.

Thanks Dave. I purchased the botryophora from the home depot back around march. I am currious to see how it looks after some santa anas and a winter in cali. Are you talking about the one with the red stalks because the thing is out of control. It was about six inches tall in the beginng of summer and is now 5' tall and sending out runners in all directions. The thing that saving me is I have one drip head on it and the runners are not finding any water and are mostly dying. Aaron

Bags - Post 5, Pic 1. I have the exact same kind (forgot name). By Thanksgiving the leaves will be 5ft across. Next Spring a bunch of volunteers will show up. I'm talking dozens. By then it's too late. I dug mine out in June, and I can still pull up all the pups and have new ones the next day. It's a full time job.
