I got this variegated bamboo last week.

Just one stick and kind of pricy. I told myself that bamboos grow pretty fast anyway so its worth it.

This is a very nice cultivar that supposedly comes from Japan. I don't have its official cultivar name though.

Here's a closeup of the leaves.

Very prominent white variegation and has tricolor pattern too.

My friend has a theory that japan produces lots of variegated plants because of the radiation from the atomic bomb.

Looks a little like Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' (see http://www.bamboogarden.com/Hibanobambusa%...Shiroshima.htm), although the variegation on mine does not seem quite as white. (It's not grown in full sun, however.) It's one of the very best things in the winter garden for me, although I don't think you have to worry about that where you are!

P.S. I think your friend has seen too many Godzilla movies!

Mark Nova - hmmm not sure if its the exact same cultivar. Mature specimens of this cultivar look dominantly white from a distance. I'll try to get a picture of a big one over the weekend.

excellent website by the way. I didn't realize there were so many varieties of bamboo.

Another good choice for finding your plant is the ABS website.....Bamboo Web

If it is the Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima', it is a runner and you'll need to make certain that you can control it.

With the whiteness of that variegation, the leaves really look like a plant that isn't a bamboo, but is sometimes mistaken for it--Arundo donax 'Variegata'. (Not at all sure that is it, just pointing out the possibility). Here are a some similar photos I found on the web:

Mark Nova - I see what you mean. But this is definitely a bamboo.

That grass sure is a beaty too though and the variegation is very very similar. We have a similar variegated grass available here but is not as robust and for some reason they also die out after a while.

Here's a pic of my Gigantochloa Luteostriata leaves. This one's easy to find at bamboo nurseries, formerly called 'South Kalimantan', it's from Indonesia.

Bumping this post from waaayyyy back in the day LOL Anyone present day know what bamboo it is?

Naples (inland), FL - technically 10a but more like 9b in the winter :hmm:

That's a super-white variegation, very impressive!  I have Gigantochloa Luteostriata #4447 from Tropical Bamboo.  It has a somewhat similar draping form, but isn't nearly as white.  My other variegated is Bambusa Suberecta "Jesse Durko" also from TB.  It's similar in the white leaves, but the growth form is more spreading tops but upright without the draping tips.  It looks similar to Bambusa Membranacea v. "Waterfall" that TB is propagating.  I've been waiting a couple of years for them to finally have that one for sale.
