My (short) experience with Hedyscepe canterburyana is pretty good in my climate. In summer, we have short heat waves to as high as 104 deg. F (40 deg. C). Perhaps the key factor is the night-time temps, which always dip to around 52-66 deg. F (11-19 deg. C), usually on the lower end of that range, due to the cold breeze of the Pacific Ocean. These palms don't seem to appreciate the super-high temps, but I give them some shade, and I haven't lost one. They are also solid to about 28 deg. F (-2 deg. C), though I can't vouch for anything lower than that. Clark's experience is that 24 deg. F is o.k., and I will be thrilled if that is the case for the bulk of these plants. Maybe he has a great clone.

Pogobob, Charles, Nelson & tyrone, thanks for your comments.

Pogobob, unfortunately i can't put them outside because it's winter here now and temperatures go to 41F/5°C these days and will go even lower next month and in January.

So that's the reason i have have to keep them inside to germinate.

Pivi... they like it COOOOL! High 30's and 40's F is what I expect every winter and Hedycepe thrives. Seedlings grow as escapees in the ground as well as in outdoor community pots. Take them inside and you may have problems. Like I said before, I been doing for a long time with these buggers :)

Pogobob i understand you with seedlings / palm growth temperatures.

But when we talk about seeds that need to germinate i don't see how would outside temperatures in the next 3 moths do any good, as we won't have high enough temperatures (17-20) which i understand is the best for this seed to germinate.

We'll have night temperatures from 32-41F (0-5°C) during december, january and probably ferburary.

And day temperatures that probably most of the time during winter in shade won't pass over 51F (around 10.5°C).

I understand that seedlings would probably love it, but germinating seeds is i guess another story. I doubt that these temperatures would provide any benefit for these seeds to germinate.

So i would probably have 3 lost months...when March comes, i guess seeds would love it outside.

What medium do you use for germination of these?

Thanks for you suggestions and opinions.

Ok, I just realized something very important. You are in possesion of seed produced in Lord Howe Isl, opposite season from us in the northern hemisphere. It is late spring down there when hede seed ripen, my seed ripens late spring up here and they germinate by fall or winter BINGO! I haven't ever tried seed from the southern hemi. I still think you should at least keep them in a cool place like maybe a garden window. Use a course mix of equal parts perlite, sand, and good potting soil. This is palm that grows at pretty much the same rate all year round, regardless if it's a seedling or mature tree.

Pivi, Pogo hit the nail on the head. These seed like it cool. My first attempt at germination was with 100 internet seed that I tried to get to pop using my polystyrene germination boxes that I use succesfully for all my seed. I place the boxes in my workshop that gets hot during most days as it has no insulation. Well it was too hot for the hedys and I got maybe 5 out of 100 to pop. Not sure how fresh the seed was though. I tried again with fresh seed from Pogo in comunity pots placed on the floor of my shadehouse where it stays cool and I am getting very high rates of germination. Just bury them half way lenghth wise like a Cycad seed and keep moist. Mother nature will take over from there. Good luck!

Yes Pogobob, it sounds wright seeds like it outside from spring, and would germinate by fall.

I take your advice they like it cool, but i'm note sure 32-41F / 0-5°C (our night winter temperatures) is cool, i would call it COLD.

Sorry to hear that. Yes i would think they were toasted in greenhouse during spring and summer.

Stevo, i guess you got seeds from pogobob in spring.

What temperature range is on the floor of your shadehouse?

Thank you for the advice how to sow them, like cyad seed half buried in the soil. I was wondering how to to do it bury them half an inch under the soil or just half way.

Thanks

Will the fruit become softer after a week soaking?

Pivi bra, I think your trying to make this more difficult than it needs to be. These seeds are so easy to germinate that trained monkeys could do it :mrlooney: . Seed that I plant in com pots I don't even clean the fruit off. It dissapears in no time. In fact with no heat in a com pot it might be beneficial to leave the fruit on. I get better germ rates from Rhopies by leaving the fruit on as well. In nature there is no one to clean the fruit off and they have been getting along just fine (at least until rats were introduced). Save the bag of tricks for Bejofo and Lemur seed :) .

Good luck,

Yeah, yeah... we'll see.

How many did i get? Enough. 40.

So you think they won't germinate just because i "shaved" them?

I cleaned them like i clean any other palm seeds. Remove the mesocarp. What you see on the picture is untouched endocarp/untouched seed.

Didn't have any problems by now, so i don't see why should this one be any different.

piwi - I've germinated Hedyscepe seed from 3 different sources (including pogoknob) over the last 5 years; they're absolutely correct when they tell you no need to clean off the pulp - stick them in loose dirt, shade, & a little moisture and you'll get sprouts in 4-6 months

I get by with a little help from my fronds

I believe there is no need to clean the seed... but i don't beleive (what pogobob is pointing out to me) that by cleaning these seeds i ruined them.

Well, I' ll post my photo again from several days ago. I didn't see this topic when I started mine, but it' s more appropriate here..

These were purchased from RPS at the beginning of February. Now all finished popping and I have 88/100. They should pick up now the nights are cooler.

Growing a few of these myself...Not too finicky here in Bermuda... survived two summers already so I think long term viability possible here.

Will agree with Dean's comment. Some are really chuggin along and a few of mine have some leaf spots. Depends on the plant. Lost one or two myself while others doing better than most of my other palms.

Still small plants in second year of growth. One in ground is doing lovely. Transplanted it in August just pushing another spear. Handles days in the 86-84F range with 80 -78F lows more proof of their ability to handle warm weather or lack of cool temps. Highest temp this summer was only 88F though. Not sure if it could take 90 F plus on a regular. Definitely speeds up during winter months when days are in the 72-68F and nights in the 63-57F range. Same goes for the Rhopies and Jubaeas I'm trying here...

Will post pics of some 2-3yr olds shortly.

Cheers,

Mike
