It's that time of year. Palms in my area are 50% off so I went out and picked up a few things. This butia was quite a bit larger than the rest and it was the only one with this color. The petioles are close to the color of Bismarkia with nice bright green leaves. The pictures almost do it justice.

Excuse the messy garden it is a work in progress.

It looks like my B.paraguayensis......

That would be a rare find in my area. Butia capitata is the only one I've seen sold around here.

That's a beauty. Butia's are among my favorite palms. I'm thinking it's straight capitata with that armament. The petioles on B. paraguayensis are spineless.

My B.paraguayensis (B.arenicola) that I´m growing from seedsb (RPS) are far from spineless and also another palm that I think is a paraguayensis because of the size of the female flowers also are armed!..............

Are Butias similar to Pheonix in that they have crossed in the wild and in cultivation to the point that there are some mutts out there in nurseries that cannot be identified with 100% certainty?

Butias hybridize easily,but not so commonly as Phoenix do,because this last are dioucious(Spelling?) so they hybridize easily. If there is ,let us say a male P.roebelleni and a female P.canariensis in a garden far away from other Phoenix palms,all (ALL!)the seeds produced by this CIDP are hybrids. The same doesn´t happen with Butias necesarilly.....
