I got this years this seed years ago from Alfred. There was alot of seed sold as D. compacta years ago. Even some D. lutescens was sold as such. This a totally different looking palm. Very hardy and always green. Crownshafts are very stocky. I remember seeing a very different looking palm in Tana botanic garden. I think these is similar. Ron

I got a plant called Dypsis baronii variety compacta Is this the same plant?

Jeff, I would probadly say no they are not. This palm is really unique. You need to check it out in person. I only got a few to grow. It is always the way. The more rare the fewer you get. I was sold alot of things as D. compacta. This was also from some alltitude. Probadly why it grows well. Ron

That is a very nice looker. I would say if this were grown in mass quantities it would go over well with the palm masses. I imagine this is what D. lutescens and cabadae would look like if they crossed, minus a few stems.
