Santa Margarita River Hike

Recommended Posts

Posted

The Santa Margarita River is tucked in a canyon north of the town Fallbrook, and running through Camp Pendleton. Driving to JD Andersen Nursery, this easy hike is less than a mile out of your way.

The hike is level, hugging the south side of the river, and is a 5+ mile out and back. My son Brennan and I just hiked 2-3 of it yesterday, and the weather was perfect.

The river is flanked by sycamores, providing lots of "Fall" color all Winter. The reflections in the water were somewhat photogenic.

I love Fallbrook. The geography is interesting, and it still has that small town feel.

Here is some interesting flora I did not expect. Wild grape vines spreading all over. I wonder what kind it is... Zinfandel? Petite Syrah maybe?

A parting shot upstream as we head back to the trailhead and the sun drops behind the surrounding hills.

Terry,

Post #5 is truly amazing. It looks like a Claude Monet?? All credit to the camera for the colors, but you really captured something there.

Great pictures Terry.

For me, it the second picture in Post #2. That is my favorite.

Paul - You were dead on. Those grapes are what you use to make bum wine... Muscadene, Scuppernong, or California Wild Grape.

Thanks John, Don and Keith. The colors are all there to begin with, my camera just does a good job of not messing them up.

Terry,

Great pics of beautiful scenery. There are so many hidden gems in the hills and mountains of So cal. I appreciate all your threads on your hikes around the local hills and mountains, I'd like to find more of them and explore them myself. Thanks for sharing the pics, I'm going to have to give it a try.

Thanks Don. There's a lot of nice trails in the Santa Ana and San Jacinto Mountains. I bet we could find some others to join us for an outing. We could stop at Kevin Weaver's afterward...
