i just love this palm. not only is it very coldhardy but also a verry variable species. i have quite a few of them growing in the garden and none of the Chamaerops humilis look the same. some of them look very diferant then the "normal' or most abundant form of C. humilis.

any other Chamaerops who look somewhat differant? pictures please :)

here is my most special C. humilis, it has +360°C leaves.

40 , i know there are a lot named variations like var arboriscens, gracilis, macrocarpa, etc.. but i did not know there were 40 differant variations with a name.

do you have a list of them? (and maybe pictures of some of them?)

Kristof- I purchased this one for it's small silvery leaves as a 5 gallon. It kept the silver even on the topside of the leaves. It's my favorite, or is it the 'Cerifera' ? I sure do like the 'Vulcano'. I'll pick one up if I ever see one offered for sale. Perito

I'm agree that are a lot variations between the Chamaerops species, they always different from eachother. I've got also one in the garden that has very white leafes.

I don't speak Italian, but there were references to varieties such as arborescens, nana, etc. I'd like to know more about these varieties. Also, is there a non-suckering Chamaerops? Is that 'Naples', if not what distinguishes that variety?

Yes they´re darn slow. Even my cactis are faster. My regular cham humilis is about year old and has only 2 and a half thick short leaves :hmm: Anyway I hope that I will able to see it trunking some day :winkie: But I think when it gets bigger it will speed up cause my two ceriferas are pretty fast

Love this palm too...

"There is one species with two accepted varieties and one cultivar

Chamaerops humilis var. argentea (syn. var. cerifera) Andr. Northwest Africa. Leaves glaucous.

Chamaerops humilis var. humilis. Southwest Europe. Leaves green.

Chamaerops humilis vulcano. Compact, thornless variety - may be silvery, but less so than argentea. The leaves tend to be thicker, and the appearance of the plant is bushier than var. humilis or var. argentea."

Actually there is a list of 48 species, subspecies, varieties, forms, and cultivars in the Genus Chamaerops:

C. acaulis · C. antillarum · C. arborescens · C. arundinacea · C. barilleti · C. biroo · C. chinensis · C. cochinchinensis · C. comesii · C. elata · C. elegans · C. excelsa · C. excelsior · C. fortunei (Chinese Windmill Palm) · C. ghiesbreghti · C. glabra · C. gracilis · C. griffithiana · C. griffithii · C. guianensis · C. helvetica · C. histrix · C. humilis (Palm Cabbage (Buds - Vegetable) · C. humilis 'Cerifera' · C. humilis 'Variegated' (Mediterranean Fan Palm) · C. humilis 'Vulcano' (European Fan Palm) · C. humilis L. var. gracilis Lodd. · C. humilis var. arborescens · C. humilis var. arborescens 'Nana' · C. humilis var. argentea · C. humilis var. cerifera (Blue Mediterranean Fan Palm) · C. hystrix · C. khasyana · C. kwanwortsik · C. louisiana · C. macrocarpa · C. martiana · C. mitis · C. mocini · C. nepalensis · C. palmetto · C. reclinata · C. ritchiana · C. serrulata · C. sinensis · C. sirotsik · C. stauracantha · C. tomentosa
