I hope to be planting about 5 Washingtonia robusta from pots. (I don't know how long they have been in the pots) They are large palms.

The sizes ranging down from about 12 meters tall as I want a focussed group area from afar. Will they group together well and how for apart should I plant them. Should the roots be fairly close to get the effect I am wanting. Any tips about the planting difficulties and the initial care will be gratefully received. This is a major project as we have have to take down some large pines and I am somewhat apprehensive!.

W. robustas grow like weeds here in California. I have one in my front yard that recieves no water, loses seeds like crazy that come up all over, and grows about 3 feet a year. You can plant them close together and they will grow away from each other over time and make a nice clustered look. I would plant them about 3-4 feet away from each other for a nice look.

Great palms no matter how common. 1-1.5 meters between specimens should be sufficient spacing.

No one cares about your current yard temperature 🙃

true robustas have smaller trunks and smaller corwns. the ones pictured below look like hybrid 'filibustas'

they are planted just far enought from eachothers that they dont really curve. however the altering heights in a trio looks nice.

Welcome to our Board!

You can plantWashie robustas close together, but they look and grow better if planted at least three feet (1 M) apart as others have suggested. I also strongly suggest you vary the crown heights if you can., as Frito's post shows If what you have to work with are small plants (budget constraints?) I'd plant one or two, and wait, then plant others as the first ones get at least a couple of meters taller.

If you will view them from afar, how far will that be from the primary viewing point. How much area to you have to work with. The distance from which you will view will have a lot to do with how far apart to put them, for maximum effect.
