I am good friends with the local meteorologist. He told me yesterday they were eyeing something just after Mardi Gras.

Keith,

Guess I'll hold off a bit longer on that banana sprout.

Ray,

I am not saying it is not going to freeze yet again this year? :rage:

But I beleive everyone misinterperates(sp) this NOAA map, someone correct me if I'm wrong?

All this map does is state whether or not it is going to the same, colder or warmer than the same average period from previous years for that time period.

It in no way indicates what the actual temperatures will be,just that it will be colder or warmer than average.

So even if your in dark blue,if your average for that time period was X degrees,it will be lower than X degrees, but still could be way above FREEZING,depending on average temp for that time period. Not mention that the forecast is 10 days out!

Your correct. Your ten day forcast is pretty reliable, and a possible two week forcast for polar jet stream positions can show where the arctic will possibly release its death. Ususally by this time of the year in SE Texas at least there are no more major arctic outbreaks. Here is hope to y'all in FL. You've had your share this year!!

Steve, good to hear from you. It has been a while. March 1st is generally considered a "safe" date here from spring plantings.

I'm tired of Fla. weather this year. It's making my hair grayer than it already is. :hmm:

C'mon Mother Nature; hit me with your best shot! We're into early spring here; you pulled a 32 F. (Goose Egg C.) night low in Miami & Ft. Lauderdale back on Mar. 3, 1980 and loused up my landscape jobs!!!...Don't try that (expletive deleted) again! :rage:

Nah, I'm too busy worrying about things that have happened (and keep happening).........

Like the drought - it's already here. I didn't post pix of cold damage, b/c with the exception of my bottle palm, most of the damage has been caused by the lack of regular rain... and I admit to not keeping up with regular watering. Today we were supposed to get rain - 60% chance - and didn't. Also, I believe this la nina is already happening, and that's never good news for FL - or LA.

OT - got a lot of chores done today (including the watering) and am sure paying for it. ow.

Looks like that cold snap is scheduled to hit Louisiana 19, 20, and 21 with respective lows of 34, 39, and 38. Add a day to that and it will be in Florida. My temps usually run a 2 to 6 degrees warmer than North Florida.

Well, heads-up neighbors - only it's the drought that's in the news, not the cold.

St. Pete Times had a fairly large article about the water restrictions - we're in Phase III whatever that is - and there's talk of going to the unprecedented Phase IV (dunno what that is either, but it sounds ugly). And they're handing out fines now, not just warnings. And dispatching county employees to go out at night to see who's "cheating." They're especially looking out for water trickling down the street as they can follow it to the source and issue fines.

Maybe it's time to look into "grey water" - or else just plant desert stuff till they get the Tampa Bay Reservoir fixed. if they do.

I'd love to, but they don't have lines running to lots of older neighborhoods including mine.

Grey water (or, reclaimed water) is used extensively around here. I have no idea if it is any good for plants or palms although I can't imagine that it would be. There are signs all over the place telling you not to drink the water from sprinklers on the side of the road. I guess that there are people that need to be told this?

I'd still love some reclaimed water lines in my neighborhood. It seems these lines are not currently where the highest water consumption takes place.

We don't have reclaimed water either, but you can "reclaim" your own. There are plumbing diagrams for it - it's a matter of re-routing water from your kitchen sink, dishwasher, or washing machine and piping it onto your garden, after filtering it - seems kind of complicated. It's popular in arid places where potable water is scarce. Also cisterns are making a comeback - the county extension office at FL Botanical Garden (up in Largo) had classes on this awhile back, so they mightl have some info on it.

Thankfully, north Pinellas is loaded with reclaimed water. The system is still being expanded to new areas frequently, but it does cost a fortune to do so.
