Variegated Licuala grandis

About two years ago i found a pitiful L.grandis in a field of hundreds. It was very variegated but the foliage was burned.(the growers had it in morning sun).I bought it for about five dollars and took it home for some TLC.I was on a mission to save this palm.I gave it a new pot with my palm mix and placed it in bright shade - no direct sun.It soon started to put out a spectacular variegeted leaf 50- 50 green and white. After about six weeks the white part of the leaf started to die from the outer edge inward until just the green part survived.I thought lack of humidity but this was during our rainy season and our humidity is 90-100%.Every fourth leaf is a solid green leaf.

Wow!!! That new leaf is a real beauty!!

And for $5 ?!? Thats a tremendous find.

I am guessing even lower light conditions and good air circulation. But based on my experience with other variegated palms the lighter variegation (yellows and whites) die off and show damage a lot earlier than the green parts. I have some palms that have light green variegation and these are a lot tougher.

Ask Ariscott about the variegated Licuala Grandis on her avatar.

Gene, it seems here that variegated plants are seen as "diseased" and are not highly coveted as they are in the east. I bought a spectacular variegated (lutino) cycas revoluta under similar circumstances.

That reminds me of Canna 'Stuttgart'--the same kind of variegation with the same type of problems. Some have said give it less sun, or more water, but neither seems to do the trick.

I would guess that thew vairegated part of the leaf, having no chloroplasts, would have a difficult time surviving, with no access to energy, it should die back over time....or am I wrong?

Bepah - Very cool palm B) ! Thanks for the photo. I agree, deeper shade and keep moist. You are still getting 50% photosynthesis per leaf. It should be sufficient. Did your fertilize  , that sometimes affects the variegation. May be you giving it new soil and love  temporarily halted the variegation.

Good luck on your ouystanding find!

Best regards, :)

What am I missing?

scottgt posted the photo, it is of his palm, and didn't indicate that the palm stopped it's variegation.Only that he couldn't keep the white part from burning and looking ratty?

It is a beautiful palm, and variegation is cool, but the problem with variegation in my opinion is ,unless it is a palm grown only in shade for it's entire life do they look good. Most varigated palms that see any amount of sun look ratty after awhile, especially full sun species. Just my opinion! :)

Thats a fantastic palm Scott! I suspect bepah is on the money, such a large expanse of leaf with no chloroplasts will be very weak and suseptible to just about anything that could chew on it.

Scott,

I am not personally a variegated "nut" but do appreciate it when I see an interesting variegated specimen. This particular plant is really impressive because of the pattern of variegation; splitting the leaf into two halves. I think it is a remarkable plant. Please do whatever you can to nurse it along. It is worth the effort to preserve this stunning palm. Good luck,
