Bo-Göran, thanks for the heads up!  I actually have been planning for the Pigafettas.  Everytime I walk around the property I make mental notes as to where they will be planted, I'm just waiting for the rainy season to kick in.  I have already potted them up 3 times so I am ready to get them in the ground before they get too big to handle.  I love how fast these palms are!  Now if I could just get my hands on some P filaris seeds......   :)

Don't forget welding gloves to plant them with... It helped with my Salacca  :P

Bill,

They are both in my shadehouse - 60% shadecloth.

B. gracilis germinated in summer 2005, so that plant is almost three years old.

C. elegans, collected the seeds in April 2006 and by late Oct 2006 I actually put this one (and its siblings) into individual 1G pots. They could easily have gone into a smaller pot at that time but I've skipped the stage with 4 inch pots and go straight for 1G (or larger) pots.

Here is one of the very few I have grown from seed. I have three like it and I found the seeds fallen from a nest in my mango trees. Age is 7 months since germination, 10-11 since planting. The seeds were small black flattened ovoids, about 2.5 cm long. The leaves are very glossy and very upright and they've taken a lot of damage when another pot was placed on this accidentally for 3 days with no ill effect. . I don't yet know what it is but I know what it is not - not borassus, phoenix, or areca.Any suggestions for ID would be very welcome.
