Hello to all,

This morning after mailing some pkgs, I stopped to photograph a Syagrus in the front yard of a house. I've been passing it for months and wondering if it was just another queen palm or a more exotic relative. Unlike S. romanzoffiana where the fronds recurve and droop, this Syagrus looks more like a shaving brush.

I used my zoom to get as close to this palm as possible because I didn't want to trespass on the homeowner's property. Besides, they had a dog inside that was freaking out behind the front window.

Any ideas, palm lovers?

Dear Meg :)

Nice visuals and that owner has trimmed that palm so beautifully that their is not a single old frond that could arch downward. Some might also call it as over trimmed too.But as for the variety I.D i do not know much of queen palms.

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

love conquers all..

That's an interesting one meg. It does appear a bit over trimmed, but I have noticed a lot of variation in queens. Some are a bit more uptight than others :) I have one in my yard that just won't relax, whereas all the others have the droopy re curve, and I don't over trim this one.

I think it's a queen, I've got six that look just like it.

I've got one that looks like that too. . .I don't overprune it, but it still looks very upright. It actually holds onto a lot of fronds though, they are just all upright. So it does look different than a regular queen that has been overpruned and only has a few fronds on top. So like others said, it probably is just normal variation, though I'd say it does look more interesting than the average queen.

Here is a pic. . .the fronds are much smaller, more upright, and more numerous than other queens I have of a similar height.
