After looking at all of these photos I have decided to poison all my cycads. I have had them for years and the majority of them are still in the seedling stage. Only 3 were big enough to plant this year and none of them has any kind of trunk. Guess they just dont like me. :(

How big are the plants under the cones ?

I was taking pictures of a bunch of blue cycads when I came across this one that I had not seen in a long time.

I've never found them to grow fast until I got them in the ground.

Of course I bought an Encephalartos gratus and a Dioon edule about seven years ago with one inch caudexs (2.5 cms) and planted both in the ground and the E. gratus has grown a little quicker. The E. gratus now has an eight inch (20 cm) caudex and five foot (1.5 M) leaves while the D. edule still has a one inch caudex and foot long leaves.. :(

How big are the plants under the cones ?

I was at the Southern California palm Society meeting at the Huntington Botanical Garden yesterday. Of all the nice cycads the garden has this fresh flush of a Zamia neurophyllidia from Panama really caught my attention!!! These leafs are about 4" long...

Thanks for the photos, Randy. The first looks more like the lowand, mainland plant from Bocas del Toro -- which is now considered to be Z. skinneri.

I just bought a big collection of blue cycas recently and they are absolutely beautiful.

Here is a pic of Cycas Angulata blue. This is one of the biggest cycads I have ever moved. It is about twice as fat in diameter as a normal sago. I greatly underestimated the weight before I began the excavation process. The base of the trunk had a huge wide swollen base about 25'' in diameter which added a crazy amount of weight. After I chopped it out of the ground, I had to keep mounding soil underneath it to rise it up since it was too heavy for three guys to lift. I estimated the total weight to be appx 800 pounds. It was so heavy that the weight totally bent my tail gate on my F250 truck when leaning it in the bed.

Here is the same species, cycas angulata but much smaller. This angulata is the same age as the big one in the post above; just didn't grow as fast.

This is another recent big removal. This specie is Macrozamia macdonnellii. I just took it out of my greenhouse and popped it in the garden since we are having a early Spring in Southern CA.

Another blue Cycas I have is Platyphylla. That pic of your Macrozamia Macdonnellii does'nt do it justice. It looks SO much better in person. In fact It's hands down one of the most beautifull Cycads I've ever seen. I just planted that big blue Longi that I got from you and 7 other blue Encephalartos. Thanks again for the nice Lati's and the other sweet deals!

Hey Big Frond, Yeah they showed up with a shovel and cash and a dealio I could'nt refuse. They got my huge coning female Kisambo and my even huger coning male Whitelockii. It's all good as I can see them anytime at Braden's nursery. Things have changed since then and were staying in San Diego for now so I've started replanting LOTS of Cycads.

Only your second flush?? I did an experiment one summer (Sago's are cheap out here) and fertilized a potted plant with Osmocote -- with minors, and a daily dose of one gallon of water and a table spoon of fish fertilizer. I got five flushes that summer.

a bluish/green arenarius that has just grown like a monster,this plant was purchased as a 1" plant 2 years ago and is now 6"+

Okay. Okay. Maybe I do need to try to learn about cycads. These are all really nice! Perhaps I need to start a separate "cycad wish list" for when I finish putting my children through college? Or maybe try germinating some seeds? Thanks for the inspiration everyone! If anyone has photos of the cycads recently identified for me on this forum, even if they are not treasured spp. please post them. I'm doing an internet (and Palmtalk)search but the more photos the better! If anyone wants to direct me as to ones that would like (or hate) my mostly 65-85 degree F humid Puerto Rican mountainous environment, please let me know. I have sun or shade, but lots of rain most months.

The very first to be pollinated this past winter and the first to fall apart.

Checked for embryos right away and was happy to find some (very small ones).

A number of E.lehmannii cones that were pollinated a week later are still hard as a rock and will most likely need a couple months more.

Here's a few new flushes.

My Cycas debaoensis X Cycas revoluta is getting an interesting flush. Compare that to a regular C. revoluta. Also my Dioon spinulosum is flushing and even my little Cycas cairnsiana

Rabbits and gophers. The cage extends below ground. My other C. debaoensis x C. revoluta got chewed on by rabbits and a gopher finally got ahold of it and pulled it under. I dug it up and replanted it but it hasn't grown yet. I don't know if it's going to make it.
