Cycad cones and flushes

Cones and flushes are always best when you get them together.  In this case, the pup on my Cycas tropophylla x micholitzii is flushing a couple of new leaves in the foreground, and the mother plant is getting ready to open up her reproductive gear in the background.... a sort of cone, at least as close as female Cycas will get.  Two perspectives based on different focal points.

Update on flush on my Dioon edule Queretaro. The leaves are all out and hardened off. The new leaves are twice as long and as many as existing leaves. In addition to the pre-existing offset, my Dioon is producing 6-8 offsets. It must be really happy in its new larger pot, a dose of fertilizer, now heat and rain.

Encephalartos turneri showing how the leaflets just don't seem to have enough room along the rachis to all fit.  It gets almost a plumose look in some sections.  The nice bright green of the new flush will turn to the deeper and darker green eventually, but it adds yet another color to the backyard color palettes.  It is a nice background for some of my blue cycads when looking out from the house to the backyard.

(aranarius x latifrons) X latifrons x latifrons is starting to push out another flush. Its hard to see but it starting to push out.

Yup, that cone will just get pushed right out of the way.  Interesting to see a different arenarius x latifrons hybrid.  Mine were the blue form and blue arenarius crossed with latifrons, and they are very blue.  Ironically, the E (arenarius x horridus) x latifrons is greener than your arenarius x latifrons, so showing none of the horridus blue.  All three are much smaller plants than your coning one, so all this is subject to change over time.  You will have fun with that puppy!!!

Just love the (arenarius x latifrons) x latifrons.  Thanks George for producing them!  They are faster than pure latifrons yet some show many of the same characteristics or if you wanted something different there were some that showed a bit of both parents.

funny thing on the aranarius x latifrons it was blue before it decided to cone. I was surprised it lost the color. there is a 6'pup off to the side that is VERY blue. I'm hoping it goes back to it original color. BTY Tracy the cone was pollinated with your aranarius x woodi pollen. It will be rad to see how this will turn out.

Gender reveal is coming on this Encephalartos horridus that I grew from a little band size 2 leaf seedling.  I don't remember exactly when I got it but estimating it was between 2005 and 2007.

I concur Jim, I love the boat shaped leaflets on the E turneri as well as that dense packing on the rachis!

Just curious if you heard if it is a "blue arenarius" or the "blue form arenarius".  I have neither in pure form, but both hybridized with latifrons.  They both show great blue color, but the "blue form" will eventually lend some of the more twisted 3D leaves that it's know for to the genetic mix.  I'm not good enough to identify the difference at the young stage, so it's a good thing I made notes somewhere.  My cousin has the blue form with leaf detail below.  It almost rivals it's twisted cousin horridus!

Hey Tracy I was told this is blue form not the true blue which is rare I do have one true blue arenarius female that I have been waiting for a flush on since i got it . It was a large offset that was being rooted after leaving it in a pot for over a year I put it in the ground last year and it was loaded with roots at the time so I’m sure I should see a flush real soon I hope .

I have never seen this hybrid push new leaves before.  Very nice Bryan; a vigorous flush due to the hybrid vigor and revoluta in the parentage.   You are getting a lot more leaves than I get on my pure debaoensis; I have a couple which are in partially shaded spots and only push 2 maybe 3 leaves, but the one pictured below is in a more sunny spot.  It pushes flushes more frequently, and is up to 4 leaves now!

i recently dug mine and it threw the same size leafs as yours.  I think mine is a stress flush from the dig?

It is being so slow to emerge!  I was hoping I would be able to see more by now, but its still just a little nub.  I hope you are right as I would like to have a female Encephalartos horridus, since the rest of my Encephalartos have been males thus far.

about 10", part of my foot can be seen in the right corner of the photo looking down on it.  It pulled down a lot after putting it into the ground a couple of years ago.  I grew it in a mix heavily biased on pumice in a pot prior to that from a tiny band through a few pots.

If I were to guess, I would say it’s a female. Male horridus cones are usually a lot darker in color than the cone on your horridus. Time will tell.

This second heat wave wasn’t hot enough to damage the new tender leaves on my Cycas Revoluta x cycas daeboensis. It seems to like the high temperatures. The leaves are going to be huge.
