The reason I ask is if it is a female I was going to try to hybridize it with my Whitelockii :drool: . I know Horridus has been crossed with Natalensis and Arenarius and others so do you think it is possible :hmm: ? Imagine a blue Cycad the size of a Whitelockii :blink: Here is a side view of the cone.

Nine months before this picture it did the same thing - male cone & half a flush.

It makes it easy the take pictures of the cone.

In the past 18 months this plant has produced 9 pups in addition to the two male cones.

It has a total of 11 pups now, the largest being 5-6 inches.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I have a very good number of Encephalartos cones this season

and a bunch more males then I need for the matching females.

On a few species I have a handful extra male cones.

Some are getting close to shedding the pollen.

I prefer using fresh pollen.

Available pollen:

E.lehmannii

E.trispinosus - several different characteristics/looks

E.horridus - several different characteristics/looks

E.lebomboensis

E.longifolius (bluish & jubertina - really blue)

E.arenarius (very bluish)

E.princeps

E.altensteinii

E.natalensis

E.manikensis

I have recieved several emails from interested people that live outside the United States.

I can only send pollen within the US because pollen is regulated by Cites (and I want to be able to get seed in return).

I will update the list in a few days since some species are producing a lot of interest.

My Cycas Debaoensis just put out a ginormous new leaf --its about 6.5 feet tall.

It went dormant for about 8 months then this came out. I like the way the sun hits it.

George- Nice to know you enjoyed the blog. While not rare this is one of my favorite flushes because it is so fuzzy that when the fronds emerge they look like rabbits paws. The caudex is fuzzy as well. Encephalartos Manikensis.

I hadnt seen this species cone before in my garden -- M. communis . I was in the garden after the heavy rains and seeing 2 plants in the beginnings of coning.

I posted a pic of my Encephalartos Manikensis recently just starting to push. Well it ended up throwing a 17 frond double row flush! Here it is and the new fronds are still soft.

Here is a pic of my E. Horridus cone. Does it look like it is receptive yet? If she is I am ready to blast her with copious amounts of E. Whitelockii pollen. If I get viable seed I'm going to name them Encephalartos Freakyensis :drool: .
