Geoff, I thought Lytoagrus as I pictured?

Gileno! You are here again ... I was afraid something happened to you ... good to know that you are well.

And the photo ... it gives so much hope, it is cute. Phantastic contrast of the feather colour and the white stones. B)

You do not forget me? You know what I mean.

Hi Verena. Nice to see you posting here again. Enjoying summer in Deutschland now? Where are the pictures of your garden and palms?

Cheers,

Gileno, you did not answer my question. :D Do not forget a special, new species of our favorite Lyto. B) And ... do not forget ME. :D

Okay, back to your request of photos ... our Garden is free of palms ... the risk is too high, our climate is too cold, no tropical palm would make it to survive.

All my plants are growing indoor. Okay, tomorrow you will see some nice pics of my cute Lyto-seedlings - self-growing from the outset. :)

And a new P. roebellinii joins us today, with a height of 1.80 m ... larger than my 1.70 m. :D

I will upload the photos tomorrow, promised.

Thanks V,

I have my eyes wide opened here for the new Lyto seeds whenever available, don't worry. I'm really very interested in growing the species myself...

And Verena, I think we have about the same climate, right? Well I do have some palms in my garden, some even in full ground (Trachycarpus fortunei, Butia eriospatha, Chamaedorea radicalis and Chamaeroops humilis) And for the rest of the palms in my garden, they are in pots and have to come in when it starts freezing again (Syagrus schizophylla, Ravenea rivularis, Parajubaea tvm, Raphydophyllum hhystrix, Jubaea chilensis, Jubaeopsis caffra and even a Lytocarium weddellianum). Of course it will be some trouble to get all these plants indoors again when the cold arrives, but in spring it's allways an adventure to decorate my garden again with all those palms!

Here's a pic of my small garden:

Aloha Kai ... well, who can refuse you anything? Not me ... but this is Gileno´s decision, and: I am the first on the list. *lol* Anyway ... should be possible to share them, it depends on the number of the seeds , especially, if Gileno will get some.

Kai, we not only have nearly the same climate, we are on the same wavelength - and so do much more others here. B)

To be honest, it is a freaky and good feeling to look at threads what handle sooooo wonderful feather palms ... and not only Trachys &. co. ;)

The facets of this forum are giant, the users friendly and adorable crazy. :D

Dear all -

besides my well growing 2 Lytocaryum Weddelianum (a third is on it´s way to me :D ) and the hero, the reviving L. hoehnei ... there are 6 cute seeds (and meanwhile seedlings) of the L. weddelianum showing their first leave, two of them have two. I am soooo proud of these adorable ladies - also knowing, that germinating a Lyto in Germany is not the easiest undertaking. B)

Tomorrow you will see some photos and - if you like it - share my enthusiasm.

Hello Verena,

I will join. I have a 1 gallon L. wed. I grew from seed sent by Colin (palmsforpleasure). It was the only seedling to survive (until now). I had a 3 g several years ago but it didn't make it. It is supposed to do well here so I don't know why I've had so much trouble. This morning I took photos.

By the way, my mother was named Verena & that is also my middle name.

Joker.

Okay ... one point to you ... as long as it does not look like an apple tree and nuts are nuts ... you have an option, my dear. Not more and not less. :D

Joking aside ... not the possession of a Lyto counts, but the interest in it. Yuck! :P

Hi, Bubba -

really? Never heard of one of the most beautiful ( :D ) feather palm yet? Well, we should change this. B)

Unfortunately, in Germany we have temperatures beeing not optimal for this rain forest plant. That´s why it is necessary to improvize. It´s main requirements are high humidity, half shade up to sunny, but not full sun, keep the palm soil wettish, but not too soaking. It doesn´t like stagnant moisture.

In Germany we all wait for the overdue summer. Within the last weeks it rained and rained and rained. The rare days with more of 20 °C are missing. The palms are waiting for the sun and the warmth, and so do we.

The (meanwhile 3) L. weddelianum life plants push new feathers ... time to stay in the sun.

And then I will upload some newer photos of my palm ladies, hope, you enjoy.

Love, Verena

I have owned L. weddellianum for many many years, but have never been able to find the other species in the genus. For me they are very tough little palms, much hardier than their reputation indicates. I leave several of them outdoors all year and they have survived temperatures of -5, but under a canopy. Direct frost will harm them. I recently killed my oldest specimen, by moving it indoors and into the direct warm air flow from the heating. It dried up and died in a matter of days. The poor thing was nearly 25 years old and had lived from one end of the country to the other, experiencing many different climatic extremes. I have another one indoors in my bedroom out of the warm air flow but still in a heated atmosphere and it is thriving. Only about 1.5 metres tall but quite happy and healthy. They are a pretty little palm and one of my favourite plants.

Hoi Grad,

My experiencie with Lytocariums is that the smallest disturbance at the root system will allmost certainly kill it. I would have never done that to a Lyto. I hope for you it will recover, it's a real beauty!

Cheers!

Yes it's alive and kicking,i think it will be okay.

I cut off 6 leaves to get the roots a better start and put a stripe on it 2 weeks ago.

Every week i give him rootstimulator and think this works.

Dear all -

a (real small, but important) update in Lytos.

My L. hoehnei (the little baby from Dan) shows a new leaf. I am totally happy and will make a photo of this cool happening. The hoehnei was nearly dead when it arrived ... but a lot of work, efforts and ST + Palmbooster made a good job. B)

For the moment this photo should last ... but the new leaf has been growing considerably. Tomorrow I will upload a new pic.

Folkz - there is need for action. Now and here. After Megs sensational post that Palms magazine introduced two new species of Lytocaryum I cannot find sleep.

Does anybody know what I have to do to get seeds or better seedlings? The best Easter I ever had with such news, unbelievable.

And ... I gues it is time to join IPS again ... many years ago I have been a member already.

I MUST HAVE THE 2 NEW LYTOS, NO MATTER HOW! ;)

I am a member of the LFS but an honorary member because I haven't had any Lytos for some time. So far, I haven't been able to keep one alive for any great time. I fear that my climate is just too oppressively hot for this cooler weather loving palm. Last fall I received some L. weddellianum seeds from Europe. Almost all of them germinated and most of those have survived - so far. If all of these croak I won't try again. I've been keeping them indoors until they grow up a bit. This morning not long after sunrise I took some photos. They are a little darker than I'd like but I couldn't wait till later because of work.

Hey, Verena, look at my babies!

And to give you some hope ... my largest Lyto I bought with a size of 20 cm in a tuff. And today? It has a size of 1.40 m. You see it works if you want. :)

Do not keep them in full sun, they like half-shadow and good watered soil. High humidity is absolute necessary.

Good luck and keep me updated, Meg. I keep my fingers crossed.
