As I was helping another buddy on Monday plant his first purchased palm tree. I stood back and thought that this is the 3rd person that I think I have infected with the palm tree bug. A month ago my friend was asking me where he could find a triple christmas palm, and I told him, in everyone of his neighbors yards. He laughed and asked I meant. I told him to stop by my house and I would show him a few pictures of some alternatives. He came by looked at a few books and lots fo my pictures and all of a sudden his light switched on and he was ready to go hunting. On our hunt we came across this triple Chambeyronia for $150, 1 look at the red leaf and he was sold. As we were looking at the rows of them I found this triple that has 3 var. 1- regular macrocarpa, 1 macrocarpa var. 'watermelon', 1 hookeri. Not thinking I shouted to him this is the 1, instead of picking out another triple and coming back later and buying it myself. Oh well my friend is soooooo excited on his score. Here are a few pics of his first palm.

He called me today to tell me about his 3 3gal Lic. grandis he bought for his back yard.

Have you got any good stories about infecting any of your friends or neighbors with the palm tree bug, lets hear them. Changing the world 1 yard at a time!

Nice visuals...and nice topic ! :winkie::)

One could protect oneself from any infection provided if that person drinks well boiled water for their consumption.

But for a nature lover, getting bitten or infected with the 'palm bug' is practically impossible. And their are cases where persons not having enough space to plant but still keep on collecting giant palms quite often.i.e nuts like me.. :mrlooney::lol:

And i honestly feel that only those who are bitten by this bug are members here !

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

Nope! I have not been able to infect anyone with the palmbug yet. But my own disease-profile seems to get worse. I bought a new Phoenix canariensis yesterday. And I was seriously thinking about buying the big one (2 meters stem and fronds 1,5 m) for 160 euro. But unfortunately I couldn't fit it in my car... (And I have no place for storing it during winter and outside it would be hard to protect it. But that's another story...)

Man, what a score! $150.00??? That triple Chambeyronia is gorgeous  . I'm totally green with envy. I would have paid triple that for it. Maybe more.

That will be the score of the year only if they survive after being dug up with such a small rootball. Chambryronias have large extensive root systems and those are good sized palms that didn't get that big in a pot. Good luck and show some pics in the near future

Great score,great price!!!

The palms are obviously field grown, not container grown, as they are B&B! And they seem to have a fairly decent rootball, almost the width of his pick-up bed?I would be more worried about the crown shaft resting right on the tailgate, bouncing driving down the road, (bruising the crown shaft) than the size of the root ball?

I would think as long as they were handled properly on both ends, the chance of survival would be pretty darn good, but what do I know?

I agree, that's a good idea for a triple, doing all 3 types that way. I think I may have to copy this idea at some point!

Kris as I believe we our both suffering from the same symptoms, to many palms not enough room, as soon as the seedlings get big enough look out neighbors here come the palms!

Ciczi , Keep trying I am sure there has to be at least 1 more palm nut in Sweden, and I am sorry to here about your CIDP loss, but dont give up try again!.

Ray that is great you have been able to convert your neighbors. I am trying to convert my neighbors but I think it is going to take me donating palms to all of them to get anything nice planted!

The palm came from a big nursery with over 100 of these singles, doubles, and triples. So I am pretty sure there should not be a problem. When we were peeling the bag off of the rootball there were a lot of new roots that looked very healthy. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for my buddy, but with us planting it in the beginning of this week right in the middle of our first good rain I think it should have a good chance.

I think they made the ride pretty good. We had the crowshafts tied down to the trailer hitch and took the long slow way home!
