Hello!

This is my first step in this forum - but I was reading here for a long time - and I enjoyed it very much!

First of all - please apologise my english, but my mother language is german --> please speak slowly with me, that I can understand you   - and I hope you will understand me

I have many exotic plants at home - only in pots  - because the climate in this area of Austria is not warm enough for them to keep them in winter outside

Now my first question to you - I hope, you can help me:

A friend of mine found these seeds on an shore of Koh Lipe Island/South Thailand

Hello Moni,

Welcome to the forum!

That is a beautiful plant with ornamental glossy serrated leaves. I wish I could help, but there are other helpful members here who might.

Hi Moni,

I've got your message. I guess your plant is in family Lythraceae, genus Lagerstroemia.

There are minor difference between species, don't excatly know which one.

- Lagerstroemia speciosa (guess this one)

- Lagerstroemia macrocarpa

- Lagerstroemia loudonii

- Lagerstroemia floribunda

Do you have picture of flowers, trunk or whole (mature) plant?

Hello!

Thank you for your info - I'm sorry, I have no further infos --- my friend Sabine gathered the seeds on the shore of Koh Lipe - she didnot see a tree/bush with similar fruits.

Perhaps the fruits were spoilt on the shore?????

I will now investigate fotos of the plants, which you mentioned above!

Thank you very much!

I'm not sure what these seedlings and fruits/seeds are, but I'm confident that they are not a Lagerstroemia species. I've grown the four species that Komkrit mentioned, and a couple others as well. None have serrated leaf margins nor that type of leaf venation. Also, leaves on Lagerstroemia are often arranged suboppositely (almost, but not quite, opposite each other on a stem); these seedlings pictured are strongly alternate.

The fruit does look (somewhat) superficially like Lagerstroemia macrocarpa, but the seeds are decidedly not a match. The seeds in Moni's picture are typical of Lagerstroemia--concave/ chiseled surfaces. The seeds in the original post (some still in fruit) look much larger and convex.

Best of luck.
