Dean, great work. The biggest problem for me (likely nothing you can do about) is I can't read the text with my failing vision. Is there a way to increase the text size? But the visuals are fantastic. Well done.

If you use the magnifying glass icon at the top of the page to blow it up, then put the cursor in the middle of the page, click, and hold down, and then you can move the page around to view the script, Ed

Excellent job, Dean. I was very impressed by the first issue. I always have great admiration for folks that can figure out technology and put it to good use. If you end up moving from HI to Juneau, AK, you have a great future in computer programming. :)

Thanks for the link & also for informing us all whats latest happenings in the palm journal front ! :)

And iam fully impressed page after page & with some audio too in the background !

Thanks & Love,

Thanks Kris,

I too "watch" a lot of my computer on my Big Screen 1080p Bravia. I am doing everything on Palmpedia in as Hi-Res as is possible, because I believe in a few years everyone will have computers fast enough to view this stuff easily, and more and more people will be hooking their computers up to the big screen. Trouble is that most of the material on the web today is not high quality enough for viewing on the big screen. Palmpedia is. Viewing nice habitat and garden photos in large clear color is much more enjoyable.

I've got no words for this! Thanks!!!

When can we expect the next issue?

As soon as I catch my breath, and depending on if and when anyone decides to contribute. :) I've had a few offers already so that is nice. If any of you creative types out there have an idea for working on a article that would lend itself to added audio and video, I will be happy to help put it together.

Now that I'm thinking about this more... and I'm not sure if this has been proposed by someone else since I didnt read the whole post. but this will be a good cost effective alternative to having the quarterly Palms subscription mailed out from the IPS. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy receiving my hard copy but I could see this becoming quite popular!

I've discussed the concept, but most people are so reluctant to try new things. That's why I took the initiative to put together a finished product so people from the IPS and the other Palm Societies could experience the actual magazine and to see if it was well received by the membership.

It is not only cost effective, but there are many other advantages not available with printed material. I have suggested to several Palm Societies of offering their publications online at a reduced rate to everyone around the world. Once the work is done it costs nothing to make it available worldwide. So even a very small subscription fee would be 100% profit for the societies. The shipping and handling of the printed versions makes that impractical. I think people in Australia would like getting the USA journals online in this format, and those in the USA would like an Australian version as well.

So if anyone thinks it's a possibility that should be explored, mention it to those who make the decisions.

I'm not sure what link you tried to follow for the "TIPS" page. But if you try again, and it is still inaccessible, please provide me with more info.

As far as Alaska goes, I doubt if I would find many gardens to showcase up there. :)

Did the computer you have trouble with have Vista, or does the one you will try at home have Vista? If it has Vista, then the computer should be new enough to play it easily. But without the specs on the computer, I can't determine much more.

Bo,

Do you happen to know the speed (specs) on your computer? If you read the "TIPS FOR SLOW COMPUTERS," it may help you out. Also the rest of the posts in this thread may offer some clues.

Pages 8/9 are the most demanding because it is also loading pages 10/11 at the same time, which includes rainstorm effects - the most demanding. The version offered on the "TIPS" page may be easier on your computer in this respect because of the way the pages are loaded - not as "pretty," but less demanding.

Great job! I went on briefly yesterday and jumped through the pages quickly and my computer jammed up. This AM I took a slower approach and had no problems. I liked the JM presentation on Madagascar although I just saw the first part. It's well done and should be watched by everyone. I personally just have to set aside the time to view the whole presentation. This magazine definitely needs repeat visits to fully appreciate everything it has.

Dean,

My system is by no means new, but you are correct, I have a dual boot system with Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)

System specs:

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz

HD: Maxtor DiamondMax 200GB (7200rpm)

Memory total: 500 MiB

On Ubuntu with no programs running, I have 67% of free RAM.

Opening Firefox reduces this to 58%.

Opening http://www.palmpedia.net/Video/PalmMag1/Default.html reduces this 49%.

Opening pages 2/3 reduces this to 42%.

Opening pages 4/5 reduces this to 36%.

Opening pages 6/7 reduces this to 29%.

Opening pages 6/7 reduces this to 23%. At this point I run into problems with my processor (CPU) running at 90%-95%. This drops to 30% when I leave the page (without exiting Firefox).

So my processor and HD speed are average, but I really need a RAM upgrade. Apparently, Windows Vista needs 1 or 2GB of RAM for it to run well, but I think that a lot of users

on Windows XP for example, with a 4/5 year-old machine, may well be in the same situation as me. It sounds geeky, but if every member was to include their sytem spec in their user profile, then "average user" stats could be posted on the forum, so that people like me would know not to fall behind on things like RAM upgrades. MattyB has 4GiB RAM?? I have 3 RAM slots on my PC so I could up mine to 1.5GiB, easily. We can't all choose our Internet connection speed, but a RAM upgrade is the first requirement in this case, and it will take the strain off your processor. I have a feeling that a few older members will be experiencing the same on their PC's.

By the way i must tell others who had some techenical glitch in their computers...First of all the modern content avaliable in the net is mostly flash animated,so you must update your flash player as soon as possible.

Secondly intels dual core duo or pentium D with minium 2.4G is sufficinet, with at least 1 Gb DDR Ram running in Dual channel mode(Cossair Brand) is fentastic. Then comming to graphic card, you must have at least 256 Mb DDR Ram,then you must have latest updates of windows Direct X patch in place.

A sata 7000 rpm type hard disc with the DMA feature enabelled.

then comming to internet connection a minimium of 512Kpbs of DSL line is needed.

And while borowsing such graphic intensive sites kindly close all your extra pages, and keep only the one you are watching !

Thanks John,

That is all useful info. And I think your main conclusion is correct about your RAM. That is the most inexpensive and most simple way to get better performance out of your system. Most new systems have a min of 4 Gigs. If you want to continue to communicate via PM, I would be interested to know if using any of the "TIPS" reduce your memory problems - like using the alternate version, reducing page size, and using the low res button at the top.

FYI - Ram is very inexpensive these days and easy to install. This site has some of the best prices and service around. It will tell you what you need. I buy all my RAM from them, although there are a few other deep discount sites as well. http://www.crucial.com/ (I just picked up 4 Gigs for my Mac laptop for $60 USD)

Unless your computer is very fast you can not flip through pages quickly the first time through. However, once you have flipped through at normal speed once, everything will be cached and you then should be able to do so. But again, without knowing your specs, I can't offer more.

Also, please take advantage of the controls. You can jump to pages much quicker than flipping through all of them using the controls at the bottom.

Kris,

Everything you say is true. The video revolution on the Web is here. Most new cameras, even new cell phones, have video capability. And my new DSLR Nikon camera will even record video in true Hi-Def. Soon, more members will be using video to share their palm and personal experiences. And if you want to see more than fuzzy jerky video, you should start thinking of a new machine, or an upgrade. Even uTube is offering higher quality video now.

Three years in the computer world is a lifetime. Today's best cell phones and PDAs can play video better than three year old computers. Even the cheapest machines today will play most video offered on the web in top quality. And with the new Windows 7 soon to be released, a new computer will be on most people's wish list if they wish to take advantage of the new video revolution. XP is very "long in the tooth."

Today you can already get most all your TV off the web and by-pass your cable service. You can watch streaming movies, and even download and rent Hi-Def movies online. You can then send them wirelessly to any TV in your house. And as you expressed, the quality and color when placed on a Hi-Def big screen is like being there. It really makes touring a garden in a Virtual Reality Panorama an experience. I'm glad you appreciate and can take advantage of what I am trying to offer on Palmpedia.

Thanks for the support. This project could use everyone's help. But unfortunately, after over 400 views of the magazine only one person has registered for Palmpedia (Thanks Simona). And you can't upload photos or add info to the encyclopedia without registering. And you can't try and win the $50 in the Palm Puzzle either.

Hi there Dean, just to let you know that I'm attempting the production of an interview audio and slide show for possible inclusion in a future online palm magazine. I'm the interviewee and my grandson is the interviewer. I thought the only way I could do this is for myself to be the guinea pig.

We have begun recording the questions and opening remarks by Matthew my 11 year old grand son and today we went about taking pics of Matthew in my garden for use to make it a video/audio experience like no other. I'm finding it very difficult to get my own space and time to complete it. We'll see.
