Thank you for your "pretty leaves"

My Rizinus ist only 20cm high - but in summer he will grow fast - I have some with green and some with red leaves - very pretty, both.

Sauromatum venosum (only in a pot): the biggest leave (in the middle) is nearly 50cm :winkie:

Seeing all these beautiful leaves I could not resist participating too.

All of these photos are from wild plants growing in the forests of Costa Rica.

Such a great subject, thanks for starting the thread, Moni. Tom, I wish my Strobilanthes looked that healthy. Mine is just starting to perk up now that our temperatures are warming up. And I agree, leaves are longer lasting and less work than flowers. Love your photos, Jose Maria. Gene, you always have some knockout plants to show off!

Let's clean out the memory card shall we?

Variegated trees

I don't know what the first one is but the tri-color variegation is veru nice. very slow too.

The next us a variegated bread fruit. The open up all green and the variegation becomes more prominent.

Kapok tree leaves. yellow green on green. I have seen one of these that has white variegation on the edges of all the leaves - very consistent.

The last is a variegated jackfruit. but it doesn't sem to be consistent. some branches come out all green.

What are these plants called?

I always like the leaf patterns. They are shade loving and get their leaves burned when light is too intense.

They vary in size too. Some are compact and small. Others are big with 1.5 foot leaves.

Yup that link shows agleonemas and most of those are the older green varieties. The Thais have hybridized and developed a lot of new varieties that have more red pigments showing and there are new named varieties coming out from that country every year.

The new varieties are always very expensive but since these are very sturdy plants that are very very very easy to propagate ( as simple as breaking off a piece and sticking it in the ground) the price drops dramatically from year to year. I'm not sure how readily available they are in Austria but I'd recommend you try them if you get the chance - but you'd probably need to keep them indoors or in your greenhouse most of the time. They give as much color as flowers and you have a display 100% of the time.
