My Ae Ae finally decided after several years to bloom and set fruit. AT the same time it has 5-6 pups coming out at the base.

I am concerned because the largest of these ouos, which is now about 2-2.5 ft tall, is all white. The pseudostem is a pinkish white and the first outer leaf is all white.

Am I correct that unless some green pops up sometime, somewhere, this pup won't make it in the end? Should I remove it now to give the other pups more of a chance to develop?

I can get a photo tomorrow for anyone who thinks they need to see it to answer the question, LOL

A plant that is all white will not be able to photosynthesize so will not survive. I would take it off so the plant doesn't waste anymore energy on a pup that will not survive.

Gina,

I agree with David. Cool looking but remove it. Congrats on keeping the Ae Ae alive. Mine perished long ago

I need to see it just for the pleasure of seeing a pupping Ae Ae! But I won't have an answer to the question... :)

In the Ae Ae, any pup that is all white will sap the strength of the rest of the mat. Unless you get a leaf with some green soon, cut it out and let it go. You will get some pups with green and they will be fine,

I thought that would be the answer, LOL. I have a birdnest anthurium that has a very strange variegation, each new leaf is completely white and looks like it contains no chloroblasts as it emerges. But after a few days, it starts to gradually marble, and goes through a stage of being a variegated leaf, then it reverts to a light green. I consulted an aroid researcher who said that many variegated plants, even if they appear all white or all pink or all yellow or whatever the variegation color is, have buried chloroblasts that are simply not numerous enough to be seen by the naked eye.

I think I will separate the pup, but pot it up and see what happens. Its certainly large enough to be taken off! The others around the base, though smaller, are definitely green and white variegated. I can see that already.

I'll get a photo after my run this am and post it

Metalfan - Try a magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate and nitrogen (systemic) combination before you remove the pups. If that does not green them up, removal then may be an option.

Kindest regards, :)

Ron.

PS - If you are a metal fan, did you see Led Zeplin live in Tampa in the 70's at the Sombrero?

sorry BUT no I missed that show.

Metal for me started with, probably, Mercyful Fate, Burzum, Venom and Mayhem...and was followed up shortly by Bathory and Slayer. Led Zepplin. while a great band in their own right, hardly qualifies as true 'metal'.

But your chemical regimen has promise

Hey Gina

I reckon leave it for a while just incase it starts popping some green.

Cheers

Gina - John Lennon said about "Elvis" regarding rock and roll, "before Elvis, there was nothing".

I say regarding heavy metal, "before Led Zepplin, there was nothing". Metal evolved very quickly away from Zepplin, which was very heavily blues influenced (many songs are covers of old blues recordings). It is my belief that their sound began and influenced the heavy metal genre. My 14 year old loves metal and appreciates Led Zepplin.

Let us know if the AE AE Banana greens up. Those chemicals should do something by September.

Kindest regards,

Ron. :)

I don't dislike LZ, we say "Get the Led Out" last month when they came to town and they were great. But I have to have a much heavier beat and much more meaty lyrics than Led Zepplin on a daily basis. I really like Amon Amarth, which is a Viking Death Metal band, at the moment. They are certainly not new, have been around for many years but their more recent music has been quantum better than their older efforts. I also like Children of Bodom, Opeth and In Flames quite a bit, and Lamb of God floats the boat as well.

I think I am going to remove this white pup today and containerize it. There are 5 or so other pups that are not developing and I think its because this one is purloining all the energy. I consulted with my banana gurus and they said take it off for the good of the colony. I'll pot it up and give it some additional nutrition and see what gives. They don't think it will survive but who knows?

THANK YOU everyone who voted I should remove the all white pup.

I did and less than 48 hours later, 2 of the other pups, both of which have promise of great variegation, just TOOK OFF and started growing like weeds! Before they had been doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. That all white pup was literally robbing everyone else of evergy.

Very cool. Probably not a good thing...some sort of abmormality but it might green up. Is that green and gold plant to the right in the first picture a croton?

Hi Epicure,

sorry to be so long answering the question you asked but we had to go out of town very suddenly ad fly to Texas for a death in our family. Just got back today. Yes, that is a croton but I forgot which one, I'd have to look at the tag

This thread made me go out and acquire one last weekend :greenthumb: from Action Theorey Nursery in Goulds, FL, 305-970-5018. It is also called Musa paradisiaca. They only have robust seven gallons left. Here is a photo of mine.

I ended up taking down the mother a week or so ago and sacrificing the hand of fruit because the squirrels were tearing stuff up trying to get to them. I cut the mom off about 5 ft from the ground. The largest pup was already at a pseudostem height about 5 ft anyway, taller with leavesaug09063.jpg
