No colour in my garden. I kept on missing the event  . My calyptrocalyx and camberoynia both opened and when I saw them they were both green already!! And same thing happened to my Heterospathe elata and green sealing wax. 'Doh!!

Hi Ari, I would say they are faster than my regular C.marcorcarpa, although I have seen a few 'watermelons' that appear to be much more vigorous, so I guess it just depends on the variety and the local conditions.

They are much more colourful though...my hookeris can keep the red leaf for 6 or 7 weeks, although not always.

Troy and Germinator, thanks for the comments on the Oval. It is my old friend, I built it from the ground up 20 years ago. Took me two years to get it all finished. It is a 1954 body on a 1968 semi-auto IRS pan, and nothing standard anywhere...

And the Hoodoo Gurus were very big at that time too...

Here's the latest colorful addition to our garden, a red Areca catechu. Just planted it today in a new section of our garden.

One side is darker than the other. The closeups of the trunk and crownshaft in the next post are of the darker side.

Hi Tim,

Yes it's the red form of the Betel. I saw it in Floribunda's parking lot, but they were out of stock. I found it at that other nursery I emailed you about, whose name I cannot put here because I am not sure if the owner is an IPS member. It was very expensive, but I wanted a big one (its about 6"). The photo was downgraded for the web and is even more stunning in real life.

Mike bought those rubberized mulch rings to save me time. Everytime we put a new plant in the ground I add slug pellets and weed preventive at the base; mulch it and then put small rocks on top to keep the cats out. I don't really like them and dont' trust that enough water gets through so I sometimes lift them and hose underneath, but they have certainly saved me a lot of time.

Gotted get out of here; we're cutting down a jumbo tree today. It will land right on our shared driveway so we need to get it done before our neighbor comes home. More room for palms!!!!

and yes the red betel looks like macrocalyx , hope mine looks as good
