Howdyall:

I am pleased to announce that the Palm Society of Southern California Meeting of September 19, 2009 will be held at the home and garden of Messrs. Gregory Haines and John Cressey, at 2170 Mendocino, Altadena, California 91001; 626-675-0849. This will be the third PSSC meeting at Messrs. Haines and Cressey's garden, and we thank them heartily for hosting us again. Those who have seen the garden before will delight in its development, and first-time viewers are in for a real treat.

"Tropicana Palms" is on more than an acre in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at an altitude of 1,300 feet above sea level, which, combined with the sloping terrain, gives it a very favored microclimate for the raising of tropical and subtropical plants, including 130 species of palms. The garden features species as diverse as Rhopalistylus and a mature, 20-foot-tall Veitchia arecina. The garden was featured in a nationwide tour of gardens earlier this year. They once hosted 800 visitors in one day, many of whom had come thousands of miles to see.

Ever wonder what you might do with more than an acre to plant on? See this garden and fantasize no more!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO ATTEND! Come, join us for a day of schmoozing about our favoirte subject with a like-minded crowd.

GETTING THERE:

Eastbound 210 Freeway: Exit at Hill Street, which puts you on Corson Street. Keep going east on Corson until you get to North Allen Avenue. Go north (left) on Allen, up the hill, through Pasadena and into Altadena until you reach Mendocino. .

Westbound 210 Freeway: Exit at Allen Avenue, go north (right) on Allen up the hill, through Pasadena and into Altadena until you reach Mendocino.

Once you reach Mendocino, make a right, and the road will fork at a large, ornate mansion. Take the left fork and continue down Mendocino until you reach 2170, the house with all the palms. There is plenty of parking on both sides of the street, for what we all hope will be vanloads filled with palmistas there to have a good time.

There will be PSSC Board meeting followed by a potluck lunch. The PSSC will provide the meat entree; we request that attendees bring other dishes you like.

See you there!

So, Len and Matty, are you coming? To the meeting, I mean . . .

It's just not a true meeting without a few people from San Diego!

I'll see if I can dig up small enough pics from the last one to post.

I know they're veterans of the fire up oin Berkely HIlls in 1989, so I'm sure they chose carefully.

Their house is near the fire, but well away form any brushy areas that would burn and endanger their place, though I'd be a bit nervous anyway. They're certainly getting the smoke, like I did down in Pasadena this morning.

I am looking to ride up with someone from the San Diego / North County area. I would be more than happy to pitch in for gas, just hoping to not have to drive by myself up there.

Let me know if anyone has room. I am in Fallbrook, but can meet up anywhere in SD County.

Thanks.
